  • Variation along the referentiality scale in the production of Spanish differential object marking by monolingual and bilingual children

Silvina Montrul, Salvador Bautista Maldonado et al.•ARTICLE•Language Learning and Development•2026

  • The impact of L1 literacy on the production of Spanish verbal passives by school-age Spanish heritage speakers

Open Access•Andrew Armstrong, Silvina Montrul•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Language Sciences•2025

Acquiring literacy contributes to monolingual children's language development, especially with the oral production of complex sentences. However, less is known about how written language exposure impacts first language (L1) morphosyntactic growth in Spanish-speaking children in the U.S., who are educated in their second language (L2) and have little opportunities to develop L1 literacy. To investigate this, we evaluated 8–12-year-old Spanish heri…

  • Boiling point

Open Access•Candice Howarth, Niall McLoughlin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2025

In July 2022, a national emergency was declared in the United Kingdom (UK) following the Met Office’s first-ever red extreme heat warning. As temperatures reached 40.3 °C, thousands of excess deaths were recorded. Based on 38 expert interviews and 4 focus groups with key decision-makers and stakeholders working on the frontline of the 2022 UK heatwaves, we found that the country is not prepared for extreme heat because: (1) policies and planning …

  • The Role of Language Experience in the Acquisition of Spanish Gender Agreement

Open Access•Silvina Montrul, Sara Ann Mason et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2024•References: 57

Why is learning the gender of nouns so difficult for some bilinguals? We test the hypothesis that different language learning backgrounds or life experience with Spanish determine how learners follow different morphosyntactic cues for gender assignment in Spanish by testing learners with early and late language experience in an experiment with invented nouns. A total of 44 monolingually raised native speakers, 44 heritage speakers, and 44 L2 lear…

  • Intra-seasonal rainfall and piped water revenue variability in rural Africa

    Open Access•Andrew Armstrong, Ellen Dyer et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Rainfall patterns influence water usage and revenue from user payments in rural Africa. We explore these dynamics by examining monthly rainfall against 4,888 records of rural piped water revenue in Ghana, Rwanda, and Uganda and quantifying revenue changes over 635 transitions between dry and wet seasons. Results show operators experience revenue variability at regional and intra-seasonal scales. Revenues fall by an average of 30 percent during th…

  • Mormon Mixed-Orientation Marriages

Elizabeth Miklya Legerski, Elizabeth Legerski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of GLBT Family Studies•2017

Interest in mixed-orientation marriages has been growing among both scholars and the general public. Members of conservative religions such as Mormonism may be particularly willing to enter a mixed-orientation marriage given the faith's emphasis on heteronormativity. Analyzing survey data from a sample of sexual minorities (n = 160) and heterosexuals (n = 80) who are or have been Mormon and in a mixed-orientation marriage, we explore variations i…

  • Psychometric assessment of health-related quality of life and symptom experience in HIV patients treated with antiretroviral therapy

Open Access•Christophe Lalanne, Andrew Armstrong et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2014

  • Multibeam bathymetric and sediment profiler evidence for ice grounding on the Chukchi Borderland, Arctic Ocean

    Open Access•Martin Jakobsson, James V Gardner et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Multibeam bathymetry and 3.5-kHz sub-bottom profiler data collected from the US icebreaker Healy in 2003 provide convincing evidence for grounded ice on the Chukchi Borderland off the northern Alaskan margin, Arctic Ocean. The data show parallel, glacially induced seafloor scours, or grooves, and intervening ridges that reach widths of 1000 m (rim to rim) and as much as 40 m relief. Following previous authors, we refer to these features as “megas…

  • Speaking through the wound

    Andrew Armstrong•ARTICLE•Journal of African Cultural Studies•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper, through an explication of Ben Okri's Stars of the New Curfew (1988) and Dangerous Love (1996) and Festus Iyayi's Heroes (1986), looks at the representation of war and social turbulence in post-independence Nigerian fiction as narrative strategies for remembering and healing. Specifically, I examine the representation of the civil war in Iyayi's novel, to which it is central, and the 'shadow of war' and military presence conveyed throu…
