Why have Indonesia's decennial agricultural censuses defined their key unit of analysis, the ‘agricultural household’, differently? How do changes to that category shape knowledge production among those who rely on census data? Based on fieldwork in a village I call Lone Teak in East Java, Indonesia, this paper examines emerging patterns of class differentiation and distributive politics. In this article, we reflect on the changing trajectories of agrarian movements in Indonesia. In the two decades after independence, a left‐populist alliance of peasants, plantation workers, and other affiliate organizations achieved a mass following and were embraced by President Sukarno.
