    The geographic focus of this paper is officially designated as Truk District, Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, East Caroline Islands. It consists of several coral atolls scattered about a complex atoll (see Map A). It is this complex atoll that is designated as Truk, although there is no specific island of that name, Truk being the English rendition of the Trukese word chuk, meaning mountain.
