Abū l-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī’s Muʿjiz Aḥmad and the Limits of Poetic Commentary
The poetry of Abū ṭ-Ṭayyib al-Mutanabbī (d. 354/965) has been the focus of numerous commentaries, most of them composed by philologists. This paper presents a comparison between one commentary, Muʿjiz Aḥmad, written by the poet Abū l-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī (d. 449/1058), and another authored by the philologist and Qurʾān scholar, Abū l-Ḥasan al-Wāḥidī (d. 468/1076), in order to determine whether the poet’s sensibility helped move the dominant philologi…
