  • On the Trail of the Jackalope

    Moira Marsh•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•2023

The jackalope—a purported cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope—is a figure of American folklore with manifestations in both narrative and material culture. In this accessible book aimed at a general audience, Michael P. Branch takes the reader on an enjoyable lope through hoaxes, tall tales, taxidermy, popular culture, and virology. The trail begins in the town of Douglas, Wyoming, which lays claim to being the home of the first jackalope mo…

  • Select bibliography of Christie Davies’ works

    Moira Marsh•ARTICLE•Humor - International Journal of…•2019•References: 14

Before I began work on this list I was advised that Christie Davies was a prolific author, and truer words were never spoken. Christie was not only a leading scholar in international humor studies but also a sociologist, a frequent commentator on current affairs, and an even more prolific reviewer of books and art exhibitions. In addition to numerous academic books and articles, he published joke books (1973, 1978) and a children’s book (2006). H…

  • Bunga-bunga on the Dreadnought

    Moira Marsh•ARTICLE•Comedy Studies•2018•References: 5

The 1910 Dreadnought hoax was famous in its day and continues to be well-known today, in large part because it involved both the young Virginia Woolf and the celebrated prankster Horace DeVere Cole. Currently, we see the affair as a ludic blow against authority, or as an anti-imperialist, anti-patriarchy stunt. In 1910, however, the joke was as much about race as it was about authority. Far from being anti-colonialist, the hoax was originally rea…

  • Believe Me, I'm Joking

    Moira Marsh•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 6

The American public is told that they can trust what the president says, except when he is joking. Jokers do not commit to the truth of what they are saying, but they do not commit to speaking untruth either. The joking frame discounts utterances, introducing not certainty, but endless ambiguity and argument. The White House's invocation of the joking frame is one more element in the destabilizing of epistemology and in widening political, cultur…

  • On going too far

    Open Access•Moira Marsh•ARTICLE•European Journal of Humour Research•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 5

In the vernacular ideology of humour there are definite ideas about where the limits of joke acceptability lie. In practice, many joke performances seem to go beyond those limits and yet arouse little if any opposition. This paper considers the role that limits play in humour through case studies of two successful practical joke performances. I argue that the performance and appreciation of jokes consists in the playful transgression of limits, b…
