  • Towards a critical space theory: The instrumental politics of space exploitation

Open Access•Savanah Simpson, Désirée Weber et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2024•References: 6

Though a growing number of voices in public discourse are expressing reservations about the new space race and its implications, inherently political questions have remained largely untouched by political theorists: Who is space for and for whose benefit? What are the ideological presumptions and functions of private space exploration? To confront this astro-aporia, we proceed in four parts. First, we develop a typology of two broad positions tha…

  • Magicians of the Twenty-first Century: Enchantment, Domination, and the Politics of Work in Silicon Valley

    Emily K Crandall, Rachel H Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2021

What is the political theorist to make of self-characterizations of Silicon Valley as the beacon of civilization-saving innovation? Through an analysis of "tech bro" masculinity and the closely related discourses of tech icons Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, we argue that undergirding Silicon Valley's technological utopia is an exploitative work ethic revamped for the industry's innovative ethos. On the one hand, Silicon Valley hypothetically offers a…

  • Sonia Sotomayor’s Legal Phenomenology, Racial Policing, and the Limits of Law

    John Mcmahon, John P Mcmahon•ARTICLE•Polity•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Sonia Sotomayor’s dissent in the Fourth Amendment case Utah v. Strieff (2016) received a great deal of media attention, particularly for its citations to prominent Black political thinkers and its evocations of Black Lives Matter. This article interprets Justice Sotomayor’s dissent as constructing an emergent legal theory that incorporates Black Lives Matter and the experiences of people of color subject to being stopped and searched into the cor…

  • Differences in gay and heterosexual men's emotional restriction through their femininity: An Irish study

John Mcmahon, Joan Tiernan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 44

Emotional expression plays a vital role in men’s mental health. However, emotionality is still perceived as a feminine response and its restriction is enmeshed in male identity. Gay men’s supposed relationship to femininity infers they are less emotionally restrictive. This paper offers evidence and theory that counters this. A quantitative study (n = 300) was undertaken on self identified heterosexual and gay adult men contacted through targeted…

  • Alexa, Alert Me When the Revolution Comes: Gender, Affect, and Labor in the Age of Home-Based Artificial Intelligence

Amy Schiller, John Mcmahon•ARTICLE•New Political Science•2019•Cited by: 14

The fantasy of automation is one of liberation from alienating tasks. Today, domestic artificial intelligence (Al) enacts this dream of frictionlessly offloading monotony. This article deploys theories of Marxist feminism, affective labor to interrogate domestic Al’s unprecedented promise of absorbing forms of labor we hardly acknowledged that we did. While these devices make the reproductive labor of the household legible as labor, we interrogat…

  • The “Enigma of Biopolitics: Antiblackness, Modernity, and Roberto Esposito’s Biopolitics

    Open Access•John Mcmahon•ARTICLE•Political Theory•2018•Cited by: 6

What would it mean to take antiblackness seriously in theories of biopolitics? How would our understanding of biopolitics change if antiblack racialization and slavery were understood as the paradigmatic expression of biopolitical violence? This essay thinks through the significance of black studies scholarship for disentangling biopolitics’ paradoxes and dilemmas. I argue that only by situating antiblackness as constitutive of modernity and of m…

  • Timely Politics: A Political Theory of Messianic, Evangelical, and Queer Temporalities

    Joanna Tice Jen, John Mcmahon•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2017

This article explores the ways that theories of queer, evangelical, and messianic time critique linear, progressive temporalities. While these critiques produce three politically varied projects, they resonate with one another in several ways. Through close readings of queer, evangelical, and messianic texts, this article: explicates their concepts of time; distills lessons about political temporality from their shared elements; and traces their …
