Consensus Organizing and Community-Based Participatory Research to Address Social-Structural Disparities and Promote Health Equity
This case study illustrates the process of integrating community-based participatory research and consensus organizing in an effort to deconstruct social-structural risk factors and markers of health disparities, and build positive relationships between members of the criminal justice system and the community. Community residents, law enforcement, and other cross-sector partners engaged in an extensive planning initiative to address crime and soc…

This study seeks to identify and describe social capital profiles among residents of a low-resource community. Worth beyond Work? Civic Engagement and Social Support Provision of Benefit Recipients
Changes in government assistance laws over the last 30 years reflect concern that government benefits cause dependency. Public discourse classifies able-bodied, non-working individuals as “undeserving” of government assistance and the literature focuses on whether individuals receiving government assistance contribute to society by engaging in paid work. This study investigates if 120 residents of a low-resource community receiving more governmen…

Residents are key assets in community change. Despite this, little is known about residents’ perspectives regarding factors that facilitate or inhibit successful planning for neighborhood transformation. We conducted focus groups with residents of a low-wealth community involved with a neighborhood planning initiative and examined a planning document to elicit lived experience perspectives. Using Colaizzi’s approach to phenomenology, the followin…
Assess Connect Transform In Our Neighborhood
Community-based participatory research calls for high levels of community involvement and shared power between community partners and researchers. Though a body of literature exists on the process and outcomes of community-engaged research, to date this literature has primarily been limited to a reporting of individual case studies. The purpose of this paper is to introduce an overarching framework for engaging community members in decision-makin…
Social Work Advocacy
This study employed an analysis of the advocacy-related resources and materials available through the 50 NASW state chapter websites. Results revealed that a large number of states had no information about advocacy on their websites (42%). One third of the mission statements reviewed contained language indicating that advocacy was part of the chapter mission, while nearly as many included no content related to advocacy or social justice on their …
Child's Gallant Army of Auxiliaries
Francis James Child's The English and Scottish Popular Ballads (1882–1898) is one of the few nineteenth-century "classic" texts of folklore scholarship to remain in print. In fact, there are more versions available now than ever before: the Dover paperback edition, the first volumes of the reconfigured edition by Loomis House, and the digital Child from Heritage MuseTM. These publications suggest a continued and resurgent interest in the ballad. …
William Motherwell's cultural politics
William Motherwell (1797-1835) - journalist, poet, man-of-letters, wit, civil servant, and outspoken conservative - participated in a loose-knit movement that might be designated cultural nationalism. Interested in preserving relics of the past that suggested a distinctly Scottish culture and nation, he was adamantly against changes he saw as eroding Scottish identity.". "Motherwell worked out his ideological stance in a variety of contexts: he f…
