The Albert Porter Pueblo great house, located in the central Mesa Verde region, was surrounded by numerous residential structures during the Pueblo II and Pueblo III periods. Using a variety of exploitation measures of wild game and turkeys, we test three hypotheses to see if there are meaningful similarities or differences in the faunal assemblages from the great house and the domestic households that surrounded it. Although the great house was …

    Open Access•Stefani A Crabtree, R Kyle Bocinsky et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2017•Cited by: 10•References: 54

The degree to which prehispanic societies in the northern upland Southwest were hierarchical or egalitarian is still debated and seems likely to have changed through time. This paper examines the plausibility of village-spanning polities in the northern Southwest by simulating the coevolution of hierarchy and warfare using extensions to the Village Ecodynamics Project's agent-based model. We additionally compile empirical data on the population s…

  • The Dynamics of Social Networks in the Late Prehispanic US Southwest

    B J Mills, John M Roberts et al.•CHAPTER•Network Analysis In Archaeology…•2013

This chapter conducts social network analysis on two case studies from the late prehispanic US Southwest. It takes a diachronic perspective in order to look at network dynamics over a 200-year period (ad 1200 to 1400). The case studies chosen are areas where, through independent data, extensive migration has been demonstrated and is widely accepted. The analyses pertain to three specific topics of archaeological interest: (1) first-comer advantag…

  • The Potential of Osteometric Data for Comprehensive Studies of Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) Husbandry in the American Southwest

Shaw Badenhorst, Robin Lyle et al.•ARTICLE•KIVA•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 2

In this paper we highlight the value of taking standardized measurements from fragmented bones of turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) from ancient sites in the American Southwest. We present turkey measurement data from two sites in the Central Mesa Verde region of southwestern Colorado; Albert Porter and Sand Canyon Pueblos, dating to the Pueblo II and III (AD 920-1280) periods. Our analyses indicate that fragmented bone epiphyses can successfully dis…

  • The Occupational History of Albert Porter Pueblo During the A.D. 1130–1180 Drought

    Susan C Ryan•ARTICLE•KIVA•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Relatively little attention has been paid to the impacts of the A.D. 1130–1180 drought in the central Mesa Verde region, despite the fact that this period coincides with the collapse of the Chaco regional system. Were great house communities depopulated during the A.D. 1130–1180 drought? This paper calls into question the use of tree-ring distributions as the sole means of re-creating population history, and offers an alternative approach utilizi…
