Reindeer Imagery in the Making at Ust’-Polui in Arctic Siberia
The history of reindeer domestication is a critical topic in the study of human-animal relationships across Northern Eurasia. The Iamal-Nenets region of Arctic Siberia, now a global centre of reindeer pastoralism, has been the subject of much recent research on reindeer domestication. However, tracking the beginnings of reindeer domestication in this region and elsewhere in Eurasia has proved challenging. Archaeological imagery is an under-utiliz…
The Settlement of Konoplyanka 2 in the Southern Trans-Urals
The article presents preliminary results of the study of the Bronze Age settlement Konoplyanka 2 in the valley of the Karagaily-Ayat River (Kartaly district of the Chelyabinsk region). The materials demonstrate the manifestations of mobility that occurred in different chronological periods of the Late Bronze Age. Topical problems such as the existence of open villages in the South Trans-Urals in Sintashta time and the features of post-Sintashta a…
Domestication as Enskilment
Age estimation of archaeological dogs using pulp cavity closure ratios
Dogs were domesticated in the Arctic
Archaeoparasitological and palynological analysis of samples from the intestinal contents of a child mummy from the Zeleniy Yar burial ground (12-13th centuries AD)
Human and Dog Consumption of Fish on the Lower Ob River of Siberia
Ust’-Polui is one of the most extensively studied archaeological sites in the western Siberian Arctic. New radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates for charcoal, faunal remains, bark, hide, and human bone from this site are presented. When modeled, the charcoal dates span from ~260 BC to 140 AD, overlapping with the dendrochronology dates from the site. These dates also overlap with the expected age of the site based on artefact typology. 14 C dates on reindeer…
