  • Delimitar y gobernar las aguas de Lima

    Open Access•Martha G Bell, Martha Bell•ARTICLE•Histórica•2016•Cited by: 2

Lima's city wall was completed in 1687, creating a physical boundary between the urban space and its rural surroundings. Yet well before this date, the division between city and countryside had been established. Water governance was one arena in which this can be observed. Officially, all water in Lima and its rural surroundings fell under the jurisdiction of Lima's Cabildo. However, the viceroy and Real Audiencia were also frequently involved in…

  • The romance of risk

    Martha Bell•ARTICLE•Journal of Adventure Education…•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 11

Adventure has outgrown its use as a metaphor and motive for educational journeys into the cultural outdoors. Self-reliance cannot counter the mechanisation of everyday life. 'Adventure' is produced and serviced by the very people who felt its worth to their own individualisation and now advance its professionalisation for their own continued participation. Yet adventure workers are limited to enforcing societal risk-mitigation systems, rather tha…

Parent peer advocacy is a distinct type of empowering relationship practised in Parent to Parent New Zealand that shares experiential knowledge gained from raising a child with disability, chronic illness or special needs and draws on both partnership and participation ideals of support. This support organisation matches families with impairment, illness and genetic difference in light of issues they encounter as families with disability. In this…

  • Modes of mobility

    Martha G Bell, Martha Bell•ARTICLE•Sites a journal of social…•2012

This paper explores the paradox of the promotion of access and inclusion through mobility for persons who experience different modes of mobility as their sensory experience of self in interaction. In this investigation, I focus on the interaction space and draw together the literatures on the sociology of the body, the sociology of action and the sociology of mobility with the aim of asking how the body in social anthropology is a moving body. I …

  • The feel of mobility

    Martha Bell•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The consequences of the neo-liberal societal 'speed-up' are lived at the apparently contradictory intersection of mobile lifestyles and obesogenic environments. The focus for public health interventions is the bodies of children. Recent interpretive research into how pre-teenaged children talk about watching television suggests that these children may be using the 'feel' of being sedentary to resist the 'feel' of being busy, while engaging with e…
