Predatory Co-optation and Party System Reversal
Based on a Zambian case study of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), this paper applies the behavioural theory of party competition to explain how, through vote-seeking and office-seeking strategies, political parties may employ rapacious predatory co-optation of members from competing political parties as a mobilisation strategy. The paper concludes that in the absence of a dominant political party, parties and political elites may reso…
Sense of Neighbourhood in a South African Urban Locale
The nature of the unfolding social cohesion in previously racially segregated residential spaces has attracted attention since the collapse of apartheid in South Africa and the subsequent transition to democracy in 1994. This paper uses sense of neighbourhood to investigate the emerging social interactions in Cambridge, a former whites-only residential suburb in East London, South Africa. Fitting a binary logistic regression on survey data from a…
Refractory Frontier
Despite the important role that intra-party democracy plays in democratic consolidation, particularly in third-wave democracies, it has not received as much attention as inter-party democracy. Based on the Zambian polity, this article uses the concept of selectocracy to explain why, to a large extent, intra-party democracy has remained a refractory frontier. Two traits of intra-party democracy are examined: leadership transitions at party preside…
Not to the highest bidder
Incumbent political parties in emerging democracies tend to use clientelism and state resources to mobilise electoral support. In most cases, they go on to win these electoral contests. However, this paper uses the Zambian example to demonstrate that mere incumbency may not always win elections. Despite the advantages of incumbency, the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) lost the 2011 elections to the opposition Patriotic Front (PF). To expl…
Unravelling clientelism in the Zambian electoral campaigns
Based on reports on selected parliamentary by-elections from 2009 to 2015 and two presidential elections in 2011 and 2015 in Zambia, this paper examines the political rhetoric to determine the presence and nature of clientelism in Zambian electoral campaigns. Zambia’s three leading newspapers, The Post, Times of Zambia and Zambia Daily Mail, were searched for reports of electoral campaigns. In total, 605 issues of each of the three newspapers spa…
Neighbourhood context and social cohesion in Southernwood, East London, South Africa
This paper examines the relationship between neighbourhood context and social interactions in Southernwood, an inner-city residential suburb in East London, South Africa. Based on interviews with selected residents and community leaders, the paper identifies six contextual variables which influenced neighbourhood social cohesion in the suburb. Contrary to expectations, interview data showed benign effects of racial diversity while social disorgan…
Spatial Integration in Residential Suburbs of East London, South Africa (1993-2008)
This paper analyses residential property transfer data (1993-2008) to examine integration in selected suburbs in East London, South Africa. The results show that a greater proportion (74%) of Black residential property transfers took place in relatively cheaper residential suburbs while 65.2% of white buyers bought in more expensive suburbs. Using the chi-square test of association, the paper tests the hypothesis that race was related to the patt…
