Challenges and recalibration
This article reconsiders late Qing state building through the underexamined lens of ecological governance, moving beyond teleological narratives of imperial decline to reassess the regime’s resilience and institutional adaptability under conditions of mounting environmental, fiscal, and geopolitical strain. Drawing on a transregional synthesis of ecological, social, political, and economic historiography, it argues that the crises confronting the…

Agricultural insurance plays a critical role in promoting the agricultural economy. However, the precise influence of agricultural insurance on diverse facets of agricultural economy development remains under explored. This study empirically analyses the effects of agricultural insurance on agricultural economy development by applying the two-way fixed effects model, the heterogeneity test model, and the mediation effect model using China’s provi…

Science, Religion and Sino-Western Exchanges
This essay explores the interlocking roles of science and religion in Sino-Western exchanges by examining China's encounter with Jesuit mathematics in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It first focuses on late Ming by studying the joint translation of Euclidean geometry by high-ranking scholar-official Xu Guangqi (1562–1633) and Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci (1552–1610). Then it studies how this encounter affected later literati-scholars, w…

Using two historical upheavals as a prism, this article …

From the beginning of its history, the United States has been connected to China in various ways, the most important being commerce. Norwood’s impressive Trading Freedom explores this vital and complicated connection by taking overseas trade as not only the ideal form of transnational interaction but also as a continuation of domestic and international politics. Focusing on the first century of the U.S. trade with China, Norwood delves into the v…

Conflict and Commerce in Maritime East Asia
Over the past several decades, maritime studies have become one of the most dynamic areas of research in social science and humanities. A good case in point is the field of Chinese maritime history
Towards an Integrated Understanding of Critical Upheavals
This article advances a general, comprehensive approach around the concept of "all-encompassing contentious crisis" to studying critical upheavals and their historical impacts. This interpretative framework aims to reorient how we think about extraordinary events by providing a rubric for converting the scheme of seemingly unrelated destructive upheavals into an integrative model of constructive development. It appropriates the theoretical insigh…
White Lotus Rebels and South China Pirates
"The reign of Emperor Jiaqing (1796-1820 CE) has long occupied an awkward position in studies of China's last dynasty, the Qing (1644-1911 CE). Conveniently marking a watershed between the prosperous eighteenth century and the tragic post-Opium War era, this quarter century has nevertheless been glossed over as an unremarkable interlude separating two well-studied epochs of great transformation. White Lotus Rebels and South China Pirates presents…
The 2009 Match-fixing Incident in Taiwan’s Professional Baseball League
The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) was the first professional sports league ever created in Taiwan, but has been plagued by a series of match-fixing scandals starting from 1996. However, the 2009 scandal happened to the most popular club, Brother Elephants. The corrupt “Windshield Wiper” ring was the mastermind behind whole affair. Twenty-six former and active players and coaches were involved that put the games’ ethics and integrity…
