  • Domestic violence advocates’ HIV prevention practices with women survivors

Sara McGirr, Katie Gregory et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2020

There is strong evidence of the association between being a survivor of domestic violence (DV) and the risk of acquiring HIV. Unfortunately, DV advocates often fail to adequately address this risk. Data from an online survey with a national convenience sample of 677 DV advocates from throughout the United States and territories were used to examine current practices and beliefs about HIV and DV. Encouragingly, advocates reported feeling comfortab…

  • Homelessness, housing instability, intimate partner violence, mental health, and functioning

Heidi Gilroy, Judith Mcfarlane et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Distress and…•2016

Homelessness and housing instability frequently accompany intimate partner violence and can negatively impact health and functioning. When children are exposed to homelessness or housing instability their ability to develop and function is compromised. The purpose of this study is to examine the differential impact of homelessness and unstable housing on health and functioning of women and their children over a 2-year period. Two hundred and seve…

  • Beyond Deficits

    Open Access•Megan R Greeson, Anne-Catherine Kennedy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 48

Exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) has negative consequences for children's well‐being and behavior. Much of the research on parenting in the context of IPV has focused on whether and how IPV victimization may negatively shape maternal parenting, and how parenting may in turn negatively influence child behavior, resulting in a deficit model of mothering in the context of IPV. However, extant research has yet to untangle the interrelation…

  • A Model of Sexually and Physically Victimized Women's Process of Attaining Effective Formal Help over Time

    Open Access•Anne-Catherine Kennedy, Angie C Kennedy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2012•Cited by: 10•References: 110

As empirical evidence has demonstrated the pervasiveness of sexual assault and intimate partner violence in the lives of women, and the links to poor mental health outcomes, attention has turned to examining how women seek and access formal help. We present a conceptual model that addresses prior limitations and makes three key contributions: It foregrounds the influence of social location and multiple contextual factors; emphasizes the importanc…

  • Experimentally Evaluating the Impact of a School-Based African-Centered Emancipatory Intervention on the Ethnic Identity of African American Adolescents

    Open Access•Kelly M Lewis, Emily Andrews et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 59

Ethnic identity, the extent to which one defines one's self as a member of a particular ethnic group, has been found to be an important predictor of African American adolescents' psychological and behavioral well-being. This study experimentally examined the effects of a school-based emancipatory intervention on the ethnic identity of African American adolescents. Using a promising education framework drawn from elements of East African Ujamaa ph…

  • An ecological examination of rural mozambican women's attainment of postwar wellbeing

    Open Access•Zermarie Deacon, Cris M Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2010•References: 26

Women's experiences of warfare and postwar recovery are qualitatively different from those of men. However, to date, the processes whereby women recover from the gendered impacts of war have not been sufficiently explored. In order to address this gap in the literature and to inform policies and services aimed at women recovering from warfare, a qualitative investigation was conducted of the process whereby women in one rural community in norther…

  • Responding to the Complex and Gendered Needs of Refugee Women

    Open Access•Zermarie Deacon, Cris M Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Affilia•2009•Cited by: 17•References: 3

Refugee women’s experiences and needs are qualitatively different from those of men. However, women’s experiences have long been overlooked in favor of a male-centered paradigm that governs the response to survivors of warfare. To close this gap in science and practice, a needs assessment was conducted with 31 refugee women. The findings revealed the importance of considering the impact of refugee women’s sociodemographic characteristics on their…
