  • An Exploration of Positive Identity Development in Women Living with Chronic Pain

    Open Access•Hillary Sharpe, Sandra Collins•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 7

We explored the concept of living positively with chronic pain using a mixed - methods design that relied primarily on hermeneutic phenomenology. Ten women described their experiences of developing a positive identity while contending with chronic pain. Throughout their journeys, the women interviewed experienced a number of key themes including: the sense of being separate from their bodies, the failure of the biomedical system, and the creation…

  • The 1940 Tokyo Games

    Sandra Collins•BOOK•1940 Tokyo Games : the Missing…•2014

By representing their experience of modernity as different from the West in their respective Olympic Games, Asian nations reveal much about the ambitions and anxieties of being an Asian host in the continuing western Olympic hegemony. This original work explores the encounter between 'the East and the West' by analyzing the deliberate self-presentational cultural diplomacy historically required of Asian Olympic hosts. Exploring the relationship b…

  • Imperial Japan at Its Zenith

    Sandra Collins, S S COLLINS•ARTICLE•Social Science Japan Journal•2012

In the historiography of postwar Japan, the trope of the ‘dark valley’ is often invoked to describe the brief interlude of Japan’s militarization between the period of Taisho and Postwar Democracy. American postwar scholarship on Japan’s dark valley has verged on the brink of nascent propaganda that erased the complex ambiguity of Japan’s interwar years in favor of a more simplistic narrative in which the Japanese military led the Japanese masses…

  • The Imperial Sportive

    Sandra Collins•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Modern Japan has a long history of sports literature. After the successful diffusion of Western sport through the school system, sport literature became popular with the advent of mass culture in 1920s Japan. In order to encourage ‘proper’ moral associations to be made between Western sport and masculinity in Japanese youth, literature about sport was actively published by Japanese media and focused primarily on schoolboys. Serialised magazines s…

    Sandra Collins•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Embedded in the Opening Ceremonies of Tokyo 1964, Seoul 1988 and Beijing 2008 are historical narratives of indigenous culture and contemporary statements of global modernity in visual form. Within the setting of a global spectacle, these visual depictions provide symbolic evidence of host cities and nations asserting East against West, yet East in union with West. The Opening Ceremonies configure national allegories, in the use of the modern medi…

  • East Asian Olympic desires

    Sandra Collins•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 7

The East Asia Olympic Games of 1964 Tokyo, 1988 Seoul and 2008 Beijing are symbolised to legitimate the Olympic Games as abstracted, universal parade of nations that is severed from their specific, geopolitical conditions. Celebrated as ‘coming out parties,’ these East Asian Olympics are visual spectacles of the globalisation of the Olympic Movement and its espoused universalism. Central to countering these Games as allegories of the ‘universalis…

  • Sporting Japanese-ness in an Americanised Japan

    Sandra Collins•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 18

As one of the only Asian nations to successfully modernise in the nineteenth century, the Japanese have been on the forefront of the West-East encounter. Many Japanese discussed the diffusion of American culture and the Americanisation of Japan, which accelerated during the inter-war (1920 – 40) period. Despite the fact that the Japanese masses enjoyed cinema, jazz, cafes and baseball, many Japanese were critical of the dynamics of Americanisatio…

  • Epilogue

Sandra Collins•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2011

For the rising nation-states of East Asia, triumph in sport was writ large as success in the context of the geo-politics of world powers. The international community, which has been largely dominated by the western hegemony of Europe and the United States, has rewarded the successful mimicry of their western institutions by East Asia which in turn contributed to the belief in the universality of their western institutions. For East Asia, inclusio…

  • Samurai’ politics

    Sandra Collins•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 3

Modern Japan has considered global sport an appropriate forum for not only defining the national cultural identity of Japan but also for conducting its international diplomacy. The recent phenomenon of Japanese baseball athletes ‘defecting’ from Japanese leagues to play for the American baseball leagues has often been described in political terms. This paper argues that the current trend of analysing Japanese nationals playing baseball in America…

    Sandra Collins•ARTICLE•Soccer and Society•2006•Cited by: 3

Despite its undisputed popularity as the world’s number one sport and despite recent successes, soccer in the US remains in the minor leagues. Notwithstanding the growth of the US soccer market since the 1994 World Cup, the US Major League Soccer (MLS) teams continue to struggle despite their anticipated market potential. The economics of professional sports has much to do with this failure. Without a large fan base, the MLS cannot secure the bro…

  • Conflicts of 1930s Japanese Olympic diplomacy in universalizing the Olympic Movement

    Sandra Collins•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 4

This paper argues that the Tokyo campaign became meaningful to Japan not only because the Tokyo Olympics represented an avenue of continued cultural diplomacy for 1930s Japan, but also because the bid effort became enveloped by the larger issues that confronted inter-war Japan. The Tokyo campaign actively challenged the universalistic claims made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and argued that the Olympic Games would not be truly uni…
