    Open Access•Lisa Voigt•ARTICLE•Atlantic Studies•2026•References: 9

This study considers the representation and interaction of the written archive and the sonic repertoire in Spanish chronicler Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés’s General and Natural History of the Indies (1535). Focusing on Oviedo’s well-known descriptions of the Indigenous areíto, I show how the corrections in one of his extant manuscripts attest to the limits of the “archive” and the superiority of the “repertoire” as, in his words, “formas …

• Afro-Catholic Festivals in the Americas

Open Access•Kevin Dawson, Jeroen Dewulf et al.•BOOK•Afro-Catholic Festivals in the…•2019

This volume demonstrates how, from the beginning of the Atlantic slave trade, enslaved and free Africans in the Americas used Catholicism and Christian-derived celebrations as spaces for autonomous cultural expression, social organization, and political empowerment. Their appropriation of Catholic-based celebrations calls into question the long-held idea that Africans and their descendants in the diaspora either resignedly accepted Christianity o…

  • The Archive and the Festival

    Open Access•Lisa Voigt•ARTICLE•Journal of Festive Studies•2019•References: 3

This article offers a brief overview and assessment of the opportunities and challenges that written, visual, and digital records hold for the study of early modern festivals, using Diana Taylor’s terminology of the “archive” and the “repertoire” and examples from colonial Latin American and early modern Iberian festivals as points of departure. While archival records are far from transparent records of the events, they can help to illuminate the…

  • Spectacular Wealth

    Lisa Voigt•BOOK•Spectacular Wealth•2016•Cited by: 6

Bridging print culture and performance, Spectacular Wealth draws on eighteenth-century festival accounts to explore how colonial residents of the silver-mining town of Potosí, in the viceroyalty of Peru, and the gold-mining region of Minas Gerais, in Brazil, created rich festive cultures that refuted European allegations of barbarism and greed. In her examination of the festive participation of the towns' diverse inhabitants, including those whos…

  • Imperial Celebrations, Local Triumphs

    Lisa Voigt•ARTICLE•Hispanic Review•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 4

This article analyzes festival accounts describing the ceremonial entries of Philip III into Lisbon in 1619 and of Bishop Manoel da Cruz into Mariana, Minas Gerais (Brazil), in 1749. The article compares the rhetorical strategies used to shift the object of celebration from the arriving dignitary to the city and its inhabitants. While the festive entries signal the power of a centralizing authority over local space, the festival accounts' authors…

Drawing on texts written by and about European and Euro-American captives in a variety of languages and genres, this book explores the role of captivity in the production of knowledge, identity, and authority in the early modern imperial world. The practice of captivity attests to the violence that infused relations between peoples of different faiths and cultures in an age of extraordinary religious divisiveness and imperial ambitions. As the bo…
