Entry and Stability of Cross-National Marriages in the United States
As more and more people move across borders, marriage is becoming an increasingly global affair. Yet cross-national marriage (CNM) migration has not received the scholarly attention it deserves. The present study examines the characteristics and marital stability of unions between U.S. nationals and their foreign-born (FB) spouses residing in the United States. Two data sources were used in the analysis-the American Community Survey (ACS) and the…
A Comparison of Divorce Risk Models in China and the United States
Divorce has become more common in China. However, studies of Chinese marriage and family life have lagged because relevant data are sparse. Using a divorce risk model, this study compares China and the United States. Chinese data came from a 2007-2008 Shanghai study containing 1,070 married or cohabiting respondents. The U.S. data came from the 2000 Survey of Marriage and Family Life containing 2,100 married individuals. In both countries, marita…
Intercountry Versus Transracial Adoption
The United States is one of the major baby-receiving countries in the world. Relatively little research has focused on why there is such a high demand for intercountry adoption. Using in-depth qualitative interviews with adoptive parents, the authors explored the reasons why Americans prefer to adopt foreign-born children instead of adopting minority children domestically. Other than infertility reasons, concerns about domestic adoption, and the …
A Mixed-Methods Analysis of Extramarital Sex in Contemporary China
Extramarital affairs and divorce are controversial issues in China. Using a mixed-methods approach, extramarital sex (EMS) was investigated by combining statistical data about behaviors and attitudes with a textual reading of contemporary newspaper and magazine articles related to EMS in China. On the basis of the 1999–2000 Chinese Health and Family Life Survey, this study indicated that about 15% of married men and 5% of married women in China h…
Marital Dissolution Among Interracial Couples
Increases in interracial marriage have been interpreted as reflecting reduced social distance among racial and ethnic groups, but little is known about the stability of interracial marriages. Using six panels of Survey of Income and Program Participation (N= 23,139 married couples), we found that interracial marriages are less stable than endogamous marriages, but these findings did not hold up consistently. After controlling for couple character…
