A Blessing and a Curse' Couples Dealing with Ambivalence Concerning Grandparental Involvement During the Transition to Parenthood-A Longitudinal Study
This contribution provides an investigation of first-time parents' experiences and strategies in dealing with ambivalence-i.e., the simultaneous presence of contradictory emotions-regarding grandparental involvement during the transition to parenthood. The study is based on qualitative longitudinal case studies comprising in-depth individual interviews with 11 Austrian couples of first-time mothers and fathers prebirth, and six months and two yea…
Theoretische Volkswirtschaftslehre
Theoretical economics is the foundation of political economics. Its meaning lies in the area between private exchange and public coercion. In summary: control of individual behavior by coercion or control by free bargaining. It is, basically, a problem of rhetoric’s, not of science. To participate in the debate requires knowledge of the relevant arguments such as the theories of Walras or Keynes, Marx or Lenin. Boned up school knowledge does not …
Key practices of equality within long parental leaves
The birth of a child often reinforces an unequal division of employment and care work among heterosexual couples. Parental leave programmes that foster long leaves tend to increase this inequality within couples. However, by investigating a particularly long parental leave system, we show that specific practices enable parents to share care work equally. Our ethnographic study includes interviews with heterosexual couples, observations in prenata…
Soziologische Paradigmen
Parental constructions of masculinity at the transition to parenthood
Men and masculinity are considered a key factor in changing gender inequality at the transition to parenthood. Prior research on gendered division of parental leave concentrated on fathers' perspectives. This paper includes perspectives of fathers and mothers who make use of parental leave in different ways and asks how masculinity is jointly constructed, how these constructions are linked to the use of parental leave, and if and how they are ori…
My Family through the Lens. Photo Interviews with Children and Sensitive Aspects of Family Life
We elaborate on an aspect of photo interviews with children that has so far not been considered sufficiently: Photographs may encourage children to talk about sensitive aspects of family life. The potential and limitations of this aspect are discussed along the lines of visibility and invisibility. Visualisations support children in verbalising their thoughts, but also stimulate narrations on issues that are not displayed. Data are drawn from int…
When Men Become Fathers
Men in the transition to parenthood have to integrate fatherhood into their self-concepts and identities. Contemporary societies, in particular, provide two contradictory discourses for fathersto-be: (1) discourses which state that fathers are to take care of financial providing (as breadwinners), and (2) over the last decades, discourses that describe highly involved and caring fathers. Most men adopt the traditional position of a breadwinning i…

Living In Migration In Austria
Despite the breakdown of Apartheid urban policies in South Africa, the migrant labor system continues to be a reality affecting African family life extensively. This article is based on qualitative research focusing on the impact of the migrant labor system on the family life of Black South Africans, in terms of both the marital and parental relationships. Rather than focusing only on the negative impact of labor migration on the relationships in…
Post‐adolescence as a new phase in the family cycle
This article investigates the phenomenon of post‐adolescence and its implications for the persons affected—both the young people and their parents—as well as for social policy. The emergence of an extended ‘moratorium’ phase for young people still in the educational system, living alone yet financially dependent on their parents is related to changes in the value systems of modern societies, the rising economic prosperity for a greater proportion…
