Gender, Family Norms, and Male-Factor Infertility in Japan: An Analysis of Internet Blogs
This study analyzes blogs about male-factor infertility posted on a Japanese blogsite on a certain day in April 2014. It focuses on an understudied topic and is the first study of Japanese male infertility based on blogs. The blog format afforded anonymity to the bloggers, and our sample of 97 adults yields the largest number of individual respondents of all cross-cultural studies cited in our literature review. We extract three major themes from…
What Should Activist Scholars Teach in the Social Problems Classroom? Social Problems Literacy for Civic Engagement
What should activist-scholars teach in the social problems classroom? In this conversation, I challenge the assertion that advancing a sociology of social problems is an overly academic enterprise of little use to students and other publics. Father’s participation in childcare and housework is one factor thought to minimize the stress and workload of wage-earning motherhood. Using an internet survey of Japanese women designed by the Japanese Institute for Labor Policy and Training (N = 495), this study explores the associations between l…
The Decline of Smoking Among Female Birth Cohorts in China in the 20th Century: A Case of Arrested Diffusion
Materialism, Gender, and Family Values in Europe
Ideational change has been posited as a key element in shifting family and fertility behaviors insofar as values are driving factors behind subsequent practices. Still, factors that shape family and parenthood values have received relatively less attention. Moreover, the possibility that these factors vary in type or extent by gender or across socio-cultural context has not been adequately explored. Using the 1999 European Values Survey, this pap…
Age, the Life Course, and Environmental Justice
A large body of research demonstrates that race, class, and gender are key factors influencing the conditions, resources, and risks that groups and individuals experience and perceive within both “green” and built environments. However, at least one dimension remains relatively absent from the literature: age. The main argument of this article is that environmental sociology and justice studies would benefit from further consideration of how age-…
