Justice for the Edifice: Praying Compensation for Rhode Island College, 1770–1800
In 1770, Rhode Island College, now Brown University, erected the biggest building in Providence. Donations tied to the slave trade funded the College Edifice, now University Hall. Some donors grew rich selling Africans or shipping slave-produced cargo. Others donated the time and labor of people they owned for construction. Brown's report on Slavery and Justice (2006) acknowledged this history but skipped over what came next. In 1776, the Edifice…
Learning in Context and Practicing in Place: Engaging Preservice Teachers in Urban-Focused Context Specific Teacher Education
Teacher education programs are increasingly taking up commitments to prepare new teachers for equitable teaching. Despite best intentions, programs feel challenged to help candidates translate these commitments into classroom practice. Using a context-specific teacher education framework, we conducted a mixed-methods study of seven urban-focused programs to understand how they targeted preparation for urban contexts. We found that while programs …
Pauline Principalities and Quantum Structures: A Match Made in Heaven
This paper integrates the notion of the Powers developed by Walter Wink with a quantum social theory posited by Alexander Wendt. While Wink argues the Powers are manifestations of social structures with an interior spirituality, resembling creatures, his picture lacks explanatory depth and is addressed by Wendt’s quantum social theory which argues agents and social structures co-emerge into a holographic (super)organism. At the same time, Wendt’s…

Breaking Down Barriers and Building Bridges: Transformative Practices in Community- and School-Based Urban Teacher Preparation
Attracting and retaining high-quality teachers is especially challenging in urban districts. It is in these communities where teacher candidates must begin their preparation. This article provides a conceptual framework and programmatic examples used to develop a community-based urban teacher preparation model within a third hybrid space where community scholars, school practitioners, and university faculty come together to create a "pipeline" of…
The Error of Looking at Indian Marriages Through Occidental Lenses
This is a cautionary illustration of what errors may occur when marital concepts and assessment tools based on one culture are used to explore another. The Marital Satisfaction Inventory - Revised, largely standardized on Western populations, was administered to 88 male and female middle class urban Hindus (MCUH) residing in New Delhi, India. The inventory items were modified so that the questions asked the respondents to reply in terms of their …

Adaptation to Stress: A Common Model and Method to Facilitate Within- and Cross-Cultural Evaluation of Foster Families
Studies meant to allow "cross-cultural" comparisons may be fatally flawed by the concepts, instruments, and discoveries of one culture being applied uncritically to another (namely, "etic" errors; cf. current discussions and examples in Chand, 2008; Durrenberger and Erem, 2007). Moreover, studies of foster families often disregard the unique ecosystemic environments in which those families are embedded (Lee, 2008). Therefore, this paper describes…
Voices of foster parents of Sudanese refugee youths: Affirmations and insights
Foster parents of Sudanese refugee adolescents were both gratified and frustrated by their desires to nurture, successfully parent, and socially interact and experience cultural differences with the youths. These parents coped with challenges with the help of God, family, peers and self-talk. Commitment to their wards typically was lifelong
Link between diet and cardiovascular disease in Latin America and the Caribbean using geographic information systems
Fish and seafood, kilocalorie, and oil-crop availability appear to be related to CVD mortality, but further investigation is needed. Associations between diet and CVD mortality create the opportunity to target specific countries for nutrition education and CVD prevention programs
If You Build It, They May Not Come”: Lessons from a Funded Project

The Voices of Accepting and Supportive Parents of Gay Sons: Towards an Ecosystemic Strengths Model
In order to uncover personal attributes and systemic influences involved in being accepting and supportive of their sons' gay identities, 14 members of a chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays were invited to describe their coming out processes as parents of gay sons. A qualitative approach examined parental definitions of acceptance, the parents' relationships with their sons, the parents' renditions of their coming out processes, a…
Therapeutic Interventions for Foster Children: A Systematic Research Synthesis
Approximately 30% of children in foster care have severe emotional, behavioral, or developmental problems. A systematic research synthesis of empirical studies was conducted in an attempt to identify and classify therapeutic interventions for foster children. Utilizing a treatment protocol classification system, empirical studies were classified according to their theoretical, clinical, and empirical support. A total of 18 studies were reviewed, …

Environments of Physically Neglected Children
A reanalysis of data from the Gaudin, Polansky, Kilpatrick, and Shilton 1996 study of 185 low-income families combined information from neglectful families with information from the comparison group. Physical neglect was related to maternal depression, more adult problems, stressful life events, negative family affect, and low social support. Multivariate analyses indicated that a combination of higher maternal education, positive family affect, …

Women Retrospectively Identify and Weight the Emotional Events of Their Lives: Exploration of a Scaling Technique
One failing of Likert-formatted rating scales is that they are ordinal scales. This limits the possible computations. To solve this problem 63 women participated in a methodological study in which Cantril's 1965 "ladder" technique was used to develop equal-interval scales with true zero points, referenced in the individuals' own experience. Each subject generated a list of life events corresponding to 9 rungs of a ladder, ranging from "no emotion…
Personality Characteristics of Very Desirable and Undesirable Childcare Workers in a Residential Setting
Scores on the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 PF) were different for childcare employees designated by their supervisors most and least desirable. This led to a rationale, specific to this setting, which potentially could augment procedures for selection of employees. The methods and cautionary concerns are proposed to other agencies

Women look at their experience of pregnancy
This investigation asked à diverse sample of women to identify retrospectively what they considered to be the central psychological events of their pregnancy. There was substantial agreement on eight of these. These events subsequently were scaled by a larger sample of women in terms of the emotional impact of each, using ratio scales based on each subject's individual frame of reference. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences in t…
