Bidirectional Comorbid Associations between Back Pain and Major Depression in US Adults
Low back pain and depression have been globally recognized as key public health problems and they are considered co-morbid conditions. This study explores both cross-sectional and longitudinal comorbid associations between back pain and major depression in the adult population in the United States. We used data from the Midlife in the United States survey (MIDUS), linking MIDUS II and III with a sample size of 2358. Logistic regression and Poisso…
Spinal Pain, Chronic Health Conditions and Health Behaviors
Spinal pain and chronic health conditions are highly prevalent, burdensome, and costly conditions, both in the United States and globally. Using cross-sectional data from the 2016 through 2018 National Health Interview Survey (n = 26,926), we explored associations between spinal pain and chronic health conditions and investigated the influence that a set of confounders may have on the associations between spinal pain and chronic health conditions…
Investigating the impact of urban landscape composition and configuration on PM2.5 concentration under the LCZ scheme
Urban landscape pattern alters the distribution of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) by affecting “source and sink” directly and microclimate indirectly. Most previous works investigate their relationship by landscape metrics that are difficult to be applied in sustainable urban planning. This study innovatively linked PM2.5 with the local climate zone (LCZ) which is a visible landscape pattern classification framework at urban scale. Impacts of ur…
Working Conditions and Wellbeing among Prison Nurses during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Comparison to Community Nurses
The psychological health and work challenges of nurses working in prisons during the COVID-19 pandemic are understudied. We evaluated the work and wellbeing characteristics of a California prison nurse group, with a comparison to those of a community nurse group. From May to November 2020, an online survey measured psychosocial and organizational work factors, sleep habits, psychological characteristics, COVID-19 impacts, and pre-pandemic recall …
Impact of Land Use on PM2.5 Pollution in a Representative City of Middle China
Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) pollution has become one of the greatest urban issues in China. Studies have shown that PM 2.5 pollution is strongly related to the land use pattern at the micro-scale and optimizing the land use pattern has been suggested as an approach to mitigate PM 2.5 pollution. However, there are only a few researches analyzing the effect of land use on PM 2.5 pollution. This paper employed land use regression (LUR) models …
Asian and Pacific Islander mortality differences in Hawaii
In the United States, national health status data pertaining to Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Americans are rarely disaggregated. By aggregating API data, however, the poor health status of some API groups is often masked by the favorable health status of others. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: (1) to compare mortality rates of the five major ethnic groups in Hawaii (Caucasians, Chinese, Filipinos, Japanese, and Hawaiians) and (2) to ex…
Asian Pacific Americans
The Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1992 mandate that state and federal public vocational rehabilitation extend efforts to further include “traditionally underserved” populations. Section 2 1 of the Rehabilitation Act Amendments specifies the Asian Pacific American population as an “underserved group, and other data indicate that they are the fastest growing minority population in the United States. Yet, current data related to rehabilitation an…
Population dynamics and kinship of the Chinese rural elderly
Intergenerational Relations
This research focuses on intergenerational disputes and grievances in the family since the China's rural economic reform of the 1980s. A sample of 158 elderly persons in two rural villages of South China were surveyed (30 of them interviewed in depth) in 1987. Findings indicate that mother-inlaw and daughter-in-law disputes are still common but power has shifted to the young compared with the past. Ideological and life style differences between g…
