Anti-fatigue effect of an enzymatically derived deer velvet extract through muscle damage recovery and improvement of antioxidant levels
These findings suggest the potential of YC-1101 as a nutraceutical adjunct in ameliorating fatigue, concurrently facilitating muscle damage recovery, and exerting antioxidant effects via the nuclear factor E2-related factor 2-Kelch-like ECH-associated protein-1 pathway. It can be assumed that the complex action of low-molecular-weight DV peptides produced during the enzymatic degradation process was effective, and the further research is needed
When a Good Thing Becomes a Better Thing: The Role of Lateral Display in Upcycled Product Advertisements
An upcycled product—a new product created from reused waste materials—has two identities: a past identity derived from the source materials and a present identity associated with the product’s current value. This research investigates how the lateral display of an upcycled product’s past identity relative to its present identity changes consumers’ evaluations of upcycled product advertisements and their word-of-mouth (WOM) intentions. Across four…
Did the Covid-19 Lockdown Reduce Smoking Rate in Adolescents
This study examined the temporal trend of smoking use and the prevalent differences in the use of different types of cigarettes for Korean adolescents before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Korea, all use of e-cigarettes, including regular cigarettes, is considered smoking. Since adolescents are susceptible to peer influences in risky behaviors including smoking, social distancing could affect the smoking behaviors of youth under these unusu…
Equity in Career Development of High School Students in South Korea: The Role of School Career Education
Along with the rising concerns of career education in school, the government in South Korea has increased investments for closing the opportunity gap in career education. However, limited studies explored the equity in students’ outcomes of career education. Focusing on career development competencies, we examined if school career education could reduce the socio-economic disparities in the career development of high school students. We used the …

When a Family Member is Ill: Implications for Prosocial Behavior Across Cultures
Extant research has yet to uncover whether cultural differences exist in reactions to family member illness and how observed differences may be explained theoretically. The current project examines the impact of cultural worldview on health assessment and behavior-using inclusive measures capturing a range of health promoting activities-when a family member is ill. Following two phases of study, grounded in Markus and Kitayama's (1991) conjecture…
The Productive Aging Concept and Social Work Students’ Perceptions Toward an Older Population
Social work curriculum that offers an optimistic perspective on aging has the potential to help social work students go on to practice in a nondiscriminatory way with older adults. This study introduces social work students to the productive aging concept, an optimistic view to social potential in later life, in lecture format and assesses postlecture changes in their perceptions of older adults. Seventy-two students (16 BSW; 56 MSW) were recruit…

Exploring cultural differences in women's body weight perception: The impact of self-construal on perceived overweight and engagement in health activities
We examined the cultural influence on perceived body weight and the level of health practices at a national and individual level. At a national level, we found that Japanese women (n = 80) overestimate body weight more than Korean (n = 82) and American (n = 63) women. At an individual level, individuals with interdependent self-construal were more prone to overestimate weight than those with independent self-construal (N = 182; American women). B…
Effects of Congruence of Product, Visual Image, and Consumer Self-Image on Art Infusion Advertising
Although previous researchers have reported that use of visual art in advertising induces more positive responses in consumers than does no art, which variables are important in inducing these responses has been largely unexamined. We investigated the moderating effects on advertising of the congruence between product and visual image, and also the congruence between visual image and self-image. The sample consisted of 228 university students in …
Socio-demographic gaps in mobile use, causes, and consequences: A multi-group analysis of the mobile divide model
This study examines mobile divide by gender, age, social economic status (SES), and social capital using a conceptual model of mobile divide. This model is composed of eight components of mobile divide which are divided into the following three groups: two antecedents of mobile use including innovativeness and competence, two types of actual mobile use (talk and non-talk), and consequences of mobile use including life management, resource use, ne…
A Facilitator of Leisure Activities for Stress-Related Growth Experience Among Middle-Aged Korean Women With Depression
Leisure may serve as a coping resource following negative life events that facilitate positive changes. Previous studies on leisure have mainly focused on stress-related growth among individuals living in Western cultures. This study aimed to capture the role of leisure involvement as a facilitator of stress-related growth among middle-aged Korean women with depression. Three main themes were identified as an outcome of participation in leisure a…
Efficacy and agency among poor families with and without children
Families with children and living in poverty are vulnerable to decreased control over their lives and the ability to act in self‐interest. While having children may reduce efficacy among these families, their presence may also, in turn, increase their resilience. Using cross‐sectional data from n = 194 poor families in Southeastern USA, this study compares the constructs of self‐efficacy and agency between families with and without children. Resu…
The Effects of Economic Pressure on the Resilience and Strengths of Individuals Living in Extreme Poverty
Economic pressure has negative effects on families living in poverty that require much resilience and strength to cope. Although the strengths perspective upholds many human service values, literature on how it can be used to build resilience of these families is scarce. This exploratory study reports on the relationship between the constructs of economic pressure and resilience among N = 194 individuals living in extreme poverty. The authors fou…

The Roles of Social Support and Coping Strategies in Predicting Breast Cancer Patients' Emotional Well-being: Testing Mediation and Moderation Models
The goal of the current study was to examine how social support and coping strategies are related in predicting emotional well-being of women with breast cancer. In achieving this goal, we examined two hypothesized models: (1) a moderation model where social support and coping strategies interact with each other in affecting psychological well-being; and (2) a mediation model where the level of social support influences choices of coping strategi…
Loneliness as the Cause and the Effect of Problematic Internet Use: The Relationship between Internet Use and Psychological Well-Being
The current research started from the assumption that one of the major motives driving individuals' Internet use is to relieve psychosocial problems (e.g., loneliness, depression). This study showed that individuals who were lonely or did not have good social skills could develop strong compulsive Internet use behaviors resulting in negative life outcomes (e.g., harming other significant activities such as work, school, or significant relationshi…

Integrative Complexity of South-north Korean Correspondences: A Time-series Analysis, 1984-1994
Integrative complexity signifies the complexity of conceptual and cognitive rules that people use in processing information. People with high complexity take diverse approaches in evaluating situations and making decisions, and those with low integrative complexity rely on simplistic and dichotomous reasoning. An integrative complexity coding scheme is used to analyze correspondences exchanged between South and North Korea. Time-series models are…

Interactive E-Commerce: Promoting Consumer Efficiency or Impulsivity
Previous research established that online shopping activity might be caused by impulse as much as by rational thinking about the conveniences of e-commerce. Interactive features of ecommerce sites, such as email alerts of special offers and "clickable" product arrays, may stimulate unregulated buying activity by undermining consumer self-regulation, but this connection has not been empirically verified. In this study, structural equation modeling…
