  • Committing to the Streets: Activism among Former Gang Members as a Pathway to Personal and Community Change

    Joseph Johnson, Joseph D Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•2022•References: 18

Deploying former gang members and ex-offenders as street-level “interrupters” remains a foundational strategy of the Cure Violence model of violence mitigation. Amidst program evaluations yielding mixed evidence for the model’s effectiveness in reducing violence, we still know relatively little about the individuals engaging in the high-risk work of interruption. This paper draws on a multiyear ethnography of interrupters to better understand the…

  • Overcoming Executive Function Deficits With Students With ADHD

    Joseph Johnson, Joseph W Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Into Practice•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 23

Academic problems are common among students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). One reason for academic problems is the difficulties in executive functions (EF) that are necessary for complex goal-oriented behaviors. Students with ADHD often exhibit EF deficits and as a result have difficulties with tasks that require planning, organizing, maintaining effort, and monitoring activities. This article outlines how teachers can help…

Open Access•Donna M Bishop, Michael J Leiber et al.•ARTICLE•Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice•2010

Significant advances have been made in our understanding of the origins and dynamics of minority overrepresentation in the juvenile justice system. Nevertheless, much remains to be learned. In this article, the authors explore the impact of race on juvenile justice processing by examining the organizational contexts in which decisions are made. They offer a theoretical framework that combines insights from organizational theory and the focal conc…

    Joseph Johnson, Joseph D Johnson•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 25

The subject of fear of crime has generated a substantial body of empirical study within Western industrialized society. However, the current focus on comparative criminology inspires efforts to study fear of crime cross culturally. This study attempts to assess some of the widely accepted predictors and conclusions of fear of crime found in developed nations on the urbanized capital city of Botswana. More specifically, in this article, the author…

Joseph Johnson, Gerard J Tellis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Research•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 22

When faced with sequential information, consumers tend to fall prey to one of two well-known heuristics: the hot (or cold) hand and the gambler's fallacy. The authors relate these two traditionally separate heuristics to differences in accepting (buy) versus rejecting (sell) decisions. They identify trend length as a contextual moderating variable and show an asymmetry between buying and selling frames. When applied to a stock market context, a c…
