- Sep., 1976), pp. 535-557
The Analysis of Subjective Culture
A Cross-Cultural Psycholinguistic Study of Attitudes Toward Nuclear-Space Development
2 studies are reported in this paper concerning social attitudes of Japanese and American college Ss toward various concepts related to nuclear and space science and technology. The first, Japanese-only study shows that, contrary to a common belief, the deep emotional “rejection reaction” to nuclear matters, known in Japan often as the “nuclear allergy”, is not very salient for at least 2 out of 3 Japanese Ss, who believe that Japan will go nucle…
Values in the Subjective Culture
Using POLDI (a variation of the semantic differential method) as a measuring instrument, evidence was shown that there is the subtle but real cultural uniquenesses of evaluative criteria despite the over-all consistency in the semantic frame of reference when Japanese and German Ss judged a set of nation concepts. Next, Evaluative Atlases of several critical concepts were constructed on the basis of data collected in 15 language/culture communiti…
Psychological Factors in International Persuasion
The basic assumption here is that laws that op erate in attitude organization and change are universal and least susceptible to contamination by language or culture. Some of the major theories relevant to persuasion are, there fore, presented to provide a universal frame of reference ac cording to which the act of persuasion can be examined, ana lyzed, and discussed. On the other hand, latent criteria used in making evaluative judgments may vary …
Japanese Attitudes Toward Nuclear Arms
More than twice in the relatively short history of the nuclear age, Japan has suffered the lethal effects of nuclear explosions, and as a result both anti-war and anti-nuclear weapons sentiments have been very strong. Will these attitudes persist, or are they subject to change as the generations having direct experience with war and its aftermath are gradually replaced by "postwar youth?" Professor Tanaka reports two approaches to this problem: o…
Psycholinguistic Studies on Cross-Cultural Generality in Cognitive Interaction
A series of cross-cultural studies are reported with regard to finding generality in cognitive interaction across culturally heterogeneous subject groups. Three kinds of cognitive interaction were examined within the frame of the affective systems: (1) concept/scale interaction, (2) concept/concept interaction, and (3) subject/scale interaction. Overall evidence to date indicates that the effect of subject/scale interaction is relatively small in…
Cross‐Cultural Compatibility of the Affective Meaning Systems (Measured by Means of Multilingual Semantic Differentials)
Cross-culture, cross-concept, and cross-subject generality of affective meaning systems
The Use of the Entropy Measure, H , as an Index of Perceptual Sign Codability
A cross-cultural and cross-linguistic experiment was reported in which the codability of perceptual signs was examined for three groups of Ss with contrasting cultural and linguistic backgrounds, i.e., American, Finnish and Japanese. The results of the present study demonstrated that the entropy measure, H, is an adequate index of codability and that it can be applied not only to colors but also to forms, and for the subject groups differing both…
Affective Dimensions of Colors
A Cross-Cultural Study of National Stereotypes Held by American and Japanese College Graduate Subjects
