  • Effects of Photovoice

Larry M Gant, Kate Shimshock et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Practice•2009•Cited by: 18•References: 25

Youth civic engagement is critical to many community empowerment initiatives. Photovoice is a popular empowerment technique for disenfranchised groups, including youth. The technique has little published empirical support. This research assesses Photovoice as a youth mobilization project within the context of an ongoing community development initiative. It was hypothesized that Photovoice participation would (a) improve students' interest in civi…

  • Disaster response

Open Access•Douglas Paton, Leigh Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Disaster Prevention and…•2000

The assumption of an automatic link between disaster exposure and pathological outcomes is increasingly being questioned. Recognition of the possibility of positive reactions and growth outcomes in this context necessitates the development of alternative models and, in particular, the accommodation of the resilience construct in research and intervention agenda. Reviews possible vulnerability and resilience factors and adopts a risk management fr…

  • Migrant Ethnic Identity and Psychological Distress

    Open Access•Drew Nesdale, Rosanna Rooney et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1997•Cited by: 52•References: 67

Although a considerable amount of research has addressed aspects of refugee and migrant adjustment to their new country of residence, little attention has been given to the causal impact of migrant ethnic identity on the adjustment process. To assess this issue, a model of migrant psychological distress was developed in which ethnic identity was predicted to influence personal coping resources (i.e., self-esteem, self-mastery, interpersonal trust…

  • The development of computer applications by non‐employed people in community settings

Open Access•Catherine Cassell, Mike Fitter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Psychology•1988

As information technology becomes an increasingly central feature in society, computerized information and the skills to access and transform it become valued commodities. This paper reports on the evaluation of a project, using action research, which aims to provide non‐employed people with access to IT in local community centres, thus encouraging the development of computer applications which are relevant to their community. It thereby differs …

  • Behind Closed Doors; Lunatic Asylum Keepers, 1800–60

    Leigh Smith, L D Smith•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•1988

This article considers the nature of staffing in lunatic asylums, during a period in which there was a steady expansion of institutional provision for the insane. Previous published work on the development of asylum provision has tended to overlook the keepers or attendants, whose role was crucial in determining the quality of care and treatment of patients. Keepers were generally recruited from the local labouring classes. It was unusual for sta…

  • The role of talkback radio

    Open Access•Judith Monaghan, Judith C Monaghan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•1978•References: 12

The suitability of talkback radio as a change agent in community psychology is outlined. Empirical research was undertaken to examine one aspect of talkback radio—assistance with listeners' problems. A broader role for this medium in community mental health is proposed.
