Do Adolescents Disengaged from Morality Feel Happy? A Cross-Lagged Effect and its Longitudinal Network Analysis
The Price of Materialism
Materialism, characterized by an excessive focus on material possessions, harms individuals’ well-being. Beyond personal downsides, this research uncovers a novel interpersonal consequence: people exhibit reduced empathy toward materialistic individuals. In Studies 1a–1c (n = 875), materialistic individuals received less empathy. Study 2 (n = 396) showed that target materialism led to lower expected reciprocity, which was linked to reduced empath…
Does population density impact maternal and child health? Mediating effects of the Universal Health Coverage Service Coverage Index
Increasing population density in countries around the world has helped to reduce maternal and child mortality. As population density has increased, so has the level of the Universal Health Coverage Service Coverage Index, which has proven effective in lowering maternal and under-5 mortality. Governments should plan interventions to build basic health facilities and allocate resources to health services based on population density, level of econom…
Lonely Older Adults in the Era of Social Media
OBJECTIVES: In an increasingly digital modern society, the loneliness of older adults is a pressing public health concern, and social media is considered a potential solution. Despite past reviews that have attempted to synthesize the association between social media usage (SMU) and loneliness in older adults, the precise connection between the 2 remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to quantify the direct relationship between SMU and lo…
Wetland ecosystem health improvement from ecological conservation and restoration offset the decline from socio‐economic development
In response to wetland degradation due to socio‐economic development, attention to ecological conservation and restoration is increasing globally. In China, more than 1100 wetland conservation and restoration projects were implemented over the past decade. However, the net effects of socio‐economic development and ecological conservation and restoration on ecosystem health have received little empirical examination. We analyzed the spatial–tempor…
Emotional labor strategies mediate the relationship between psychological empowerment and burnout of frontline hotel employees
We examined the relationships among psychological empowerment, emotional labor strategies, and job burnout of frontline hotel employees with reference to conservation of resources theory and the job demands–resources model. A sample of 414 employees from a Chinese chain hotel was recruited to take part in this study. There was a significant negative correlation between psychological empowerment and job burnout for these frontline hotel employees.…
“Our Country Needs a Strong Leader Right Now”
Societal inequality has been found to harm the mental and physical health of its members and undermine overall social cohesion. Here, we tested the hypothesis that economic inequality is associated with a wish for a strong leader in a study involving 28 countries from five continents (Study 1, N = 6,112), a study involving an Australian community sample (Study 2, N = 515), and two experiments (Study 3a, N = 96; Study 3b, N = 296). We found correl…

Regaining In-Group Continuity in Times of Anxiety About the Group's Future
Collective nostalgia for the good old days of the country thrives across the world. However, little is known about the social psychological dynamics of this collective emotion across cultures. We predicted that collective nostalgia is triggered by collective angst as it helps people to restore a sense of in-group continuity via stronger in-group belonging and out-group rejection (in the form of opposition to immigrants). Based on a sample (N = 5,…
Cultural Values Moderate the Impact of Relative Deprivation
Relative deprivation (RD) is the judgment that one or one's ingroup is worse off compared with some relevant standard coupled with feelings of dissatisfaction, anger, and resentment. RD predicts a wide range of outcomes, but it is unclear whether this relationship is moderated by national cultural differences. Therefore, in the first study, we used national assessments of individual-collectivism and power distance to code 303 effect sizes from 31…
Influence of leader and employee emotional labor on service performance
Given the importance of emotional labor for service-oriented enterprises, it is highly valuable to explore how leader emotional labor affects the emotional labor strategy used by employees. This study was based on affective events theory and we used hierarchical linear modeling to explore cross-hierarchical relationships among leader emotional labor, employee emotional labor, and employee service performance. We tested the model with data from 53…
Having a Lot of a Good Thing
Membership in important social groups can promote a positive identity. We propose and test an identity resource model in which personal self-esteem is boosted by membership in additional important social groups. Belonging to multiple important group memberships predicts personal self-esteem in children (Study 1a), older adults (Study 1b), and former residents of a homeless shelter (Study 1c). Study 2 shows that the effects of multiple important g…
The Role of Intergroup Permeability on Chinese Migrant Children's Social Integration
We used structural equation modeling to examine the influencing factors and mediating mechanism in the process of migrant children's social integration. Participants were 437 migrant children in Shanghai. The results showed that as a risk factor, perceived discrimination had a significant negative effect on the migrant children's social integration. Intergroup permeability had a mediation effect in the relationship between migrant children's perc…
“It Will Not Always Be This Way”
In the context of school segregation in China, the authors propose that disadvantaged group members’ self-esteem should improve when they consider the prospect of a better future for the group (i.e., awareness of cognitive alternatives to the lower status position). A pilot study established that country workers’ children who were educated with city children (i.e., in integrated schools) reported higher self-esteem than country workers’ children …
Minority goals for interaction with the majority
Four studies investigated the conditions under which minority group members respond to group‐based discrimination with increased identification with their group. We propose that minorities' interaction goals should serve as a moderator: seeking distance from the majority might keep minority identification alive in the face of perceived discrimination. These predictions were tested correlationally in Study 1 among Chinese immigrants in Australia (…
