Racism in the Jury Box
Despite the voluminous empirical literature on the social psychology of juries, very little research has centered on racial or ethnic issues. Indeed, there has been no previous research on Hispanics or on minority groups other than blacks. The present study involved an innovative methodology high in both experimental and mundane realism, incorporating a procedure whereby participants believed that they were actually on a jury whose decisions woul…
Theoretical Perspectives on Chicano Personality Development
The vast majority of the empirical research dealing with personality development in Mexican-Americans has focused on the measurement of specific variables like cognitive style, cooperation-competition, need for achievement, selfconcept, and locus of control. While the level of methodological sophistication in cross-cultural psychology has improved dramatically in recent years, few advances have-been made at the theoretical level. Traditional theo…
The Fear-Affiliation Relationship
The relative saliency of social comparison and anxiety reduction as motives for affiliation under conditions of fear was examined within a cross-cultural context. Forty-eight Chicano and forty-eight Anglo adolescents, equally divided by sex, were randomly assigned to condition high or low fear. While the analyses based on manipulated fear failed to replicate the classic findings of Darley and Aronson (1966) supporting the social comparison explan…
Culture, personality, and reactions to praise and criticism1
An empirical study was designed to investigate the effects of personality and sociocultural background on reactions to positive and negative performance feedback. Eighty college students of two sociocultural backgrounds (Mexican- and Anglo-American) were asked to work on a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle and were then either praised or criticized, ostensibly according to their “problem-solving strategies,” but actually on the basis of random assi…

Responsibility Attribution among Mexican-American, Black, and Anglo Adolescents and Adults
Although the literature dealing with attribution of responsibility (AR) is rather extensive, the cross-cultural perspectives have not been fully explored. This study investigates AR in a rigorous factorial design involving ethnicity (Mexican-Americans, Blacks, Anglos), sex, age (adults, adolescents), Heider's levels of causality, outcome quality (positive, negative), and outcome intensity (mild, severe). The cultural factor was highly significant…
