    Open Access•Federico Pachetti, James Lin•ARTICLE•Modern China•2026

How do states navigate economic crises? How do crises affect state capitalist systems? This article explores how the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) understood and responded to the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and the 2007–2008 Global Financial Crisis. It argues that Chinese policymakers and economic decision makers were often constrained by global political factors and structures, for example, concerns over government legitimac…

  • Taiwan and Southeast Asia

James Lin•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•2026

Inspired by the late historian Aaron Moore's work exploring the continued legacies of the Japanese Empire in postwar Southeast Asia, this article examines a similar trajectory for Taiwan in Southeast Asia. Propelled by both nascent economic growth at home and a desire to seek anticommunist allies, the Republic of China on Taiwan launched development missions throughout Southeast Asia. Taiwanese development in Southeast Asia was conducted in the n…

  • Nostalgia for Japanese colonialism

    Open Access•James Lin•ARTICLE•History Compass•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Taiwan is unique among postcolonial societies today for a widespread social nostalgia for Japanese colonial rule. Contrasted with anti‐Japanese sentiment in neighboring East Asian societies like South Korea and China, Taiwan seems to present a puzzling instance of “pro‐colonial” nostalgia. This article discusses this phenomenon through reviewing recent scholarship of Japanese and Guomindang rule of Taiwan and Taiwanese postcolonialism. Nostalgia …

In the 1920s, American scientists and missionaries began experimenting with development in China through local universities and villages. From then until the early 1970s, American, Chinese, and Taiwanese scientists integrated farmers' associations, laboratory research, …

High rates of gambling and problem gambling among the Chinese have been well documented in anecdotal and empirical reports. However, there is a lack of research on the relationship between important gambling correlates (e.g., gambling cognitions and psychological states) and gambling. This study investigated the role of gambling cognitions and psychological states on problem gambling behavior among 501 participants (306 Caucasians and 195 Chinese…

Mark Newman, James Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2003

Through a study of Web site design practice, we observed that designers employ multiple representations of Web sites as they progress through the design process and that these representations allow them to focus on different aspects of the design. In particular, we observed that Web site designers focus their design efforts at 3 different levels of granularity-site map, storyboard, and individual page-and that designers sketch at all levels durin…
