Personality Traits in Relation to Sociocultural Adaptation of International Students in Thailand and New Zealand
Etic studies on international students who venture into higher education in a culture distinct from their own create an impetus for perusing their personality traits and adeptness to the new culture, apropos to working harmoniously, reducing culture shock and acculturative stress, and obtaining the anticipated aspirations. The objective was to explore personality traits as a culture-specific aspect and examine how international students select a …
A Test of the Multidimensionality of the Self-Construal Scale in Thailand and the United States
In this study, the authors examined a series of nested confirmatory factor analytic models to assess the multidimensionality of the Self-Construal Scale (SCS) in Thailand and the United States. The authors compared the original two-factor model with the more recently developed six-factor model and examined model fit for cross-cultural invariance. Results suggested a substantially better fit to the data for the six-factor model in the American sam…
A test of the personality-culture clash hypothesis among college students in an individualistic and collectivistic culture
Increased susceptibility to distress among young adults from diverse cultural backgrounds amplifies the importance of identifying culturally-salient factors related to the development of mental illness. To address this issue we investigated the relationship between culture (Thai and American), self-construal (independent and interdependent) and distress. As predicted, results revealed that Americans possess a more salient independent self-constru…
The Effect of Normative and Behavioral Persuasion on Help Seeking in Thai and American College Students
On the basis of previous research on self-construals, the theory of reasoned action, and persuasive communication, the authors hypothesized that individual, behavioral-focused information would be more effective in increasing help-seeking intention among college students in the United States, whereas relational, normative-focused information would be more effective among college students in Thailand. Results partially supported these predictions,…
Culture-Level Dimensions of Social Axioms and Their Correlates across 41 Cultures
Leung and colleagues have revealed a five-dimensional structure of social axioms across individuals from five cultural groups. The present research was designed to reveal the culture level factor structure of social axioms and its correlates across 41 nations. An ecological factor analysis on the 60 items of the Social Axioms Survey extracted two factors: Dynamic Externality correlates with value measures tapping collectivism, hierarchy, and cons…
