“Eyes” On Me! 3- to 6-Year-Old Children Anthropomorphize Humanoid Robot with Biological and Mental Attributions
The increasing integration of humanoid robots into educational and social contexts underscores the importance of understanding how young children perceive robots. This study examines how children aged 3–6 years (N = 90, 54 females) and adults (N = 24, 11 females) attribute physical, biological, and mental properties to humanoid robots, assessing the impact of humanoid appearance on anthropomorphic perceptions. Participants engaged in a structured…
The role of trait inference and pragmatic inference in young children’s selective learning
Should we turn a deaf ear or take responsibility? The bystander effect in helping behavior of young children
The bystander effect is well-documented in adults, but its developmental origins and underlying mechanisms in young children remain unclear. This study examined how bystander characteristics influence 5-year-olds’ prosocial decisions through three experiments with 247 young children ( M = 5.00 years, SD = 0.58; 121 girls). Using a helping task paradigm in which young children chose between personal gain and helping others, we systematically manip…
Can mothers’ testimony revise children’s naïve physical beliefs? Young children’s learning in different physics concepts / El papel del testimonio materno en la revisión de las creencias infantiles in…
Young children develop naïve theories, which often contain misconceptions, spontaneously before formal education. Testimony from others plays a crucial role in revising their initial false beliefs. Understanding the development of children’s naïve theories and the factors influencing children’s naïve belief revision is of great importance. The present study examined belief revision in three-to-five-year-old children ( N = 90) when exposed to scie…
Preschoolers' selective trust in moral promises

This study examined the cognitive predictors and constraints of children’s strategic offers in the Ultimatum Game. The Ultimatum Game is a one-shot negotiation on the division of a given sum of rewards between two people, where the receiver has the right to punish the proposer by rejecting unfair offers, which results in nil reward for either party. Ninety-four Hong Kong children ranged between three and six years of age (48 girls, M = 4.94, SD =…
“Attraction of the like”
Context-Sensitivity Influences German and Chinese Preschoolers’ Comprehension of Indirect Communication
Making inferences in communication is a highly context-dependent endeavor. Previous research found cultural variations for context-sensitivity as well as for communication comprehension. However, the relative impact of culture and context-sensitivity on communication comprehension has not been investigated so far. The current study aimed at investigating this interplay and tested 4- and 6-year-old children from Germany ( n = 132) and China ( n = …

Psychological implications of the Covid ‐19 pandemic around the world
Although psychological researchers have long studied the implications of major crises, the outbreak and spread of the COVID‐19 pandemic have confronted the global community of psychologists and psychological researchers with new challenges. This special issue contributes to the growing empirical literature on the immediate psychological implications of the COVID‐19 pandemic. We present and discuss diverse work from authors that followed our call …
Effects of rhythmic turn-taking coordination on five-year-old children’s prosocial behaviors
Rhythmic activities such as joint music-making and synchronous moving are known to produce prosocial effects in both adults and children, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. One possible mechanism is that the time-locked, fine-grained coordination characteristic of rhythmic activities plays a key role in producing powerful prosocial effects. The present study investigated how coordination in a joint music-making task would influence kin…
The development of intent-based moral judgment and moral behavior in the context of indirect reciprocity
The current study aimed to investigate the cultural differences in the developmental origins of children’s intent-based moral judgment and moral behavior in the context of indirect reciprocity. To this end, we compared how German and Chinese children interpret and react to antisocial and prosocial interactions between puppets. An actor puppet performed either a positive or negative act toward a prosocial or antisocial target puppet with the inten…
Reasoning about nature’s agency and design in the cultural context of China
Research has found that non-religious adults have an automatic tendency to construe natural phenomena as intentionally created. Related work has focused on whether Western and non-Western adults spontaneously assign functions to natural phenomena but, to date, no studies have explored whether an assumption of intentional origins extends to a non-Western culture without an Abrahamic cultural tradition and associated design discourse. We therefore …
Emotional intelligence of 3- to 6-year-olds and parenting style
We examined the associations of parenting style and children's emotional intelligence with the children's peer communication ability, focusing especially on the mediating role of peer communication ability in the relationship between parenting style and children's emotional intelligence. We recruited 306 parents in the cities of Hangzhou, Changchun, and Lanzhou in China to participate in the study. Participants reported on their parenting style a…
Associations between empathy and altruistic sharing behavior in Chinese adults
Previous research has shown that affective empathy, rather than cognitive empathy, significantly predicts people's altruistic sharing behavior in economic games. However, most of these studies were conducted in Western populations. There might be cultural differences in the relations between empathy and altruism due to different levels of empathy between Western and Asian individuals. In this study, we measured different aspects of empathy in Chi…

Cultural influences on the teleological stance
Recent research has suggested that humans have a robust tendency to default to teleological (i.e., purpose-based) explanations of natural phenomena. However, because samples have previously been heavily drawn from Western cultures, it is unclear whether this is a universal cognitive bias or whether prior findings are a product of Western philosophical and theological traditions. We evaluated these possibilities by administering a speeded judgment…
Developing Concepts of the Mind, Body, and Afterlife
Children and adults from the us (Study 1) and China (Study 2) heard about people who died in two types of narrative contexts – medical and religious – and judged whether their psychological and biological capacities cease or persist after death. Most 5- to 6-year-olds reported that all capacities would cease. In the us , but not China, there was an increase in persistence judgments at 7–8 years, which decreased thereafter. us children’s persisten…

English- and Mandarin-learning infants’ discrimination of actions and objects in dynamic events
The present studies examined the role of linguistic experience in directing English and Mandarin learners' attention to aspects of a visual scene. Specifically, they asked whether young language learners in these 2 cultures attend to differential aspects of a word-learning situation. Two groups of English and Mandarin learners, 6-8-month-olds (n = 65) and 17-19-month-olds (n = 91), participated in 2 studies, based on a habituation paradigm, desig…

A reexamination of the robustness of the framing effect in cognitive processing
We conducted 2 experiments on the framing effect; recording reaction times in the first using a questionnaire and in the second using a computer-programmed procedure. We found that a positive framing effect caused participants to make faster decisions and show an intuitive, heuristic, decision-making pattern; whereas a negative framing effect caused participants to make slower decisions and show a rational, analytical, decision-making pattern. Th…
Acquisition of generic noun phrases in Chinese
English-speaking children understand and produce generic expressions in the preschool years, but there are cross-linguistic differences in how generics are expressed. Three studies examined interpretation of generic noun phrases in three- to seven-year-old child ( N =192) and adult speakers ( N =163) of Mandarin Chinese. Contrary to suggestions by Bloom (1981), Chinese-speaking adults honor a clear distinction between generics (expressed as bare …

English- and Chinese-learning infants map novel labels to objects and actions differently
Research based on naturalistic and checklist methods has revealed differences between English and Chinese monolingual children in their trajectories of learning nouns and verbs. However, studies based on controlled laboratory designs (e.g., Imai et al., 2008) have yielded a more mixed picture. Guided by a multidimensional view of word learning (in which different mechanisms are weighted and recruited to different extents over development), we exa…

Scaling of Theory-of-Mind Understandings in Chinese Children
Prior research demonstrates that understanding of theory of mind develops at different paces in children raised in different cultures. Are these differences simply differences in timing, or do they represent different patterns of cultural learning? That is, to what extent are sequences of theory-of-mind understanding universal, and to what extent are they culture-specific? We addressed these questions by using a theory-of-mind scale to examine pe…
The Development of Chinese Children’s Decision-Making in Ultimatum and Dictator Games
Flexibility of Theory of Mind in a Matrix Game when Partner's Level is Different
The development of theory of mind (ToM) was investigated as flexibility of prediction and decision-making in matrix games with 202 13-, 16-, 19-, and 24-year-old participants. The ToM flexibility of prediction and decision-making showed no significant differences among any age group. The ToM flexibility of prediction and decision-making of the 0th-order partner was better than that of the 1st-order partner. The ToM flexibility of prediction was b…

Do Consumers' Perceptions of Price Fairness Differ According to Type of Firm Ownership
We investigated Chinese consumers' perceptions of price fairness by introducing the type of firm ownership (state-owned monopoly, and non-state-owned corporation) as an independent variable, to investigate whether or not people's feelings of price fairness differ between stateand non-state-owned firms. Results showed that our participants tended to accept price rise because of cost increase, but not price rise because of an increase in demand. Pa…
