  • Gentrification and Neighborhood Housing Wealth

    Open Access•Kévin Beck•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2024•References: 21

Few researchers have considered how gentrification affects inequalities of housing wealth between Black and White neighborhoods. Drawing on the U.S. census and the American Community Survey, I test the hypothesis that home values rise more slowly in gentrifying neighborhoods that are majority Black compared to those that are majority White. I find that home values appreciate more quickly in gentrifying neighborhoods that are majority Black, parti…

  • Residential Mobility, Housing Costs, and Relationships among Neighbors

    Open Access•Kévin Beck•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2024•References: 18

Drawing on the California Health Interview Survey, I test the hypothesis that cost-related movers—renters who recently moved due to unaffordable housing costs—are less likely to trust their neighbors and count on them for support than renters who recently moved for other housing-related reasons and renters who did not recently move. I find that, on average, trust and support are lower among cost-related movers. My findings suggest that cost-relat…

  • What Drives Displacement? Involuntary Mobility and the Faces of Gentrification

    Open Access•Kévin Beck, Isaac William Martins•ARTICLE•City and Community•2024•References: 15

Recent quantitative studies on the relationship between gentrification and residential displacement have produced inconsistent findings. We examine whether these differences may be attributed to variation in the conceptualization and measurement of gentrification by testing a variety of different operational definitions of gentrification while holding data sources and other methodological decisions fixed. We treat gentrification as a family of re…

  • Effect of curing conditions and formulation on the adhesive strength of stone-siporex mortar composite

Open Access•Harith E Ali, Xavier Brunetaud et al.•ARTICLE•Nexo Revista Científica•2023

Background: Adhesive strength is one of the most important properties of the hardened mortar, and influenced by mortar workability (i.e. mortar water content), and substrate roughness surface degree. Objective: This study aims to measure the adhesion strength between three different hydrated aerial lime mortars, and the two most common building units in old and modern building in Loire valley in France: Tuffeau and Siporex, under different relati…

  • Experimental thermo-hydric study to simulate natural weathering conditions

    Open Access•Emilie Huby, C Thomachot-Schneider et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2022•References: 19

  • Civic Engagement, Legal Status, and the Context of Reception

    Open Access•Kévin Beck, Karina Shklyan•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 58

For undocumented immigrants, processes of integration are contingent on the qualities of their local context. A lack of legal status may require them to strategically manage their presence in order to avoid detection that could lead to deportation. The authors ask how the need to mask one's legal status affects the civic integration of undocumented immigrants. Drawing primarily on data from the California Health Interview Survey, the authors esti…

  • Nanolime consolidation of the main building stone of the archaeological site of Volubilis (Morocco)

Open Access•Dalal Badreddine, Kévin Beck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 28

  • Social Support and Residential Stability in Privately Owned Assisted Housing

    Open Access•Kévin Beck•ARTICLE•City and Community•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Theories explaining social cohesion in assisted housing largely pivot between two positions. The first suggests that assisted renters tend to be isolated from their neighbors because they live in high–poverty neighborhoods and in housing complexes that inhibit residential interaction. The second suggests that assisted renters are not isolated but instead exchange support with their neighbors in order to mitigate material hardships. How do residen…

  • Thermal stress and damage risk in the stones of Al-Ziggurat in Al-Nimrud city, Iraq

  • Trust and the Built Environment in New York City's Public Housing

    Open Access•Kévin Beck•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 54

Public housing has been an important site for empirical research on concentrated poverty, social isolation, and social organization. Scholars have demonstrated that public housing was disproportionately built in high poverty neighborhoods, thereby exacerbating the physical and social isolation of residents. They have also hypothesized that physical features of public housing may contribute to a breakdown of social organization. These hypotheses m…

  • Gentrification, Property Tax Limitation, and Displacement

    Open Access•Isaac William Martins, Kévin Beck•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2018•Cited by: 47•References: 32

Scholars have long argued that gentrification may displace long-term homeowners by causing their property taxes to increase, and policy makers, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have cited this argument as a justification for state laws that limit the increase of residential property taxes. We test the hypotheses that gentrification directly displaces homeowners by increasing their property taxes, and that property tax limitation protects residen…

  • Property Tax Limitation and Racial Inequality in Effective Tax Rates

Open Access•Isaac William Martins, Isaac William Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 28

In the late 20th century, two thirds of American states enacted policies to limit the growth of local property tax revenues. We examine the effects of property tax limitations on the effective property tax rates reported by homeowners of different racial and ethnic groups in the United States. We find that property tax limitations reduce the effective property tax rates of homeowners regardless of their race and ethnicity, but that most forms of …
