  • Underneath the Purple Stain

Open Access•Ana Catarina Pinheiro, Ana Z Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2022•References: 3

The Alcobacenses are one of the most important Portuguese collections of Monastic codices. During a campaign study to further advance our knowledge on this important legacy and its state of conservation, a heavily deteriorated codex (ALC.338) stood out due to the presence of purple stains on the lower margins on virtually all folios. In some of them, the purple stains are accompanied by yellow and brown patches as well. Also noticed was the prese…

  • Filling the gap

Ana Sofia Santo Tourais, Conceição Casanova et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Recent works on medieval manuscripts often combine historic research on textual content and illuminated decoration with material studies, such as pigment characterization, but less frequently with the material structure of codices or their bookbinding features. Glass crystal models arrived in Portugal around the late 19th century, when high schools, universities, and polytechnics were gradually provided with teaching collections to support science education. Therefore, they are an important material evidence of teaching methodologies of mineral and geology science in the 20th century. The Passos Manuel high school in Lisbon, owns a significant collection of scientific heritage, currently on a long-term …

  • Through the eyes of science and art

Catarina Alexandra Martins Fernandes Barreira, Maria J Melo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 5

The collection of manuscripts from the monastery of Alcobaça is one of the most important in the Cistercian world. The scriptorium was active from the end of the twelfth to the sixteenth century, and during the end of the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth centuries, transformations both in the materials used for colour and in style, namely historiated and filigreed initials, occurred. In this paper, through the study of a little-know…

  • Beatus manuscripts under the microscope

Alicia Miguélez Cavero, Maria J Melo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 3

The Alcobaça Beatus (Lisbon, National Library, Alc. 247) is one of the few extant unillustrated copies of the eighth-century Commentary on the Apocalypse attributed to the Iberian monk Beatus of Liébana. It has traditionally been considered that this Beatus was produced at the Cistercian Portuguese abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaça and that its model was the Lorvão Beatus (Lisbon, Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo, Ordem de Cister, Mosteiro de Sa…
