Electron paramagnetic resonance and discriminant analysis of white pigment used by Early Neolithic potters in the Eastern Romanian Plain
A Multi-Analytical Study of a 17th-Century Wallachian Icon Depicting the “Mother of God with Child”
As part of a detailed investigation project focused on the painting materials and technical features used in Wallachia during the 17th and 18th century, the imperial icon “Mother of God with Child” from the Orthodox Church of the “Annunciation” in Râmnicu Vâlcea, Romania, was investigated before the restoration intervention. A minimally invasive multi-analytical approach consisting of high-resolution digital radiography, hyperspectral imaging, UV…
Non-Destructive Textural Characterization of Southern Romanian Neolithic and Chalcolithic Pottery Using Digital Image Analysis on Tomographically Reconstructed Sections
Pottery is a complex archaeological material that is found ubiquitously in various spatial—temporal frameworks from all over the world; therefore, it is of great importance to archaeological research. The current paper aims to present and discuss the results obtained on a batch of Neolithic (ca. 6000–5000 BC) and Chalcolithic (ca. 5000–3900 BC) pottery sherds from Southern Romania through X-ray Computed Tomography, a non-destructive methodology t…
On the Geochemistry of the Danube River Sediments (Serbian Sector)
To determine the nature and origin of the unconsolidated bottom sediments, as well as to demonstrate and quantify the presence of Presumably Contaminating Elements (PCE) in the Serbian Danube River, as a novelty, the mass fractions on nine major elements as oxides-SiO 2 , TiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , FeO, MnO, MgO, CaO, Na 2 O, and K 2 O, as well as Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Zr, Sb, Cs, Ba, La, Hf, Ta, W, Th, and U were determined by Instrumen…
Major and Trace Elements in Moldavian Orchard Soil and Fruits
The correct assessment of the presence of potentially contaminating elements in soil, as well as in fruits cultivated and harvested from the same places has major importance for both the environment and human health. To address this task, in the case of the Republic of Moldova where the fruit production has a significant contribution to the gross domestic product, the mass fractions of 37 elements (Na, Mg, Al, Ca, Si, K, Mn, Fe, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Co…
A comparative study of two icons representing the “Coronation of the Virgin by the Holy Trinity”
On the geochemistry of the Late Quaternary loess deposits of Dobrogea (Romania)
Ten samples of loess and palaeosols collected from the Costinesti–Dobrogea (Romania) loess deposit and covering a time span of about 690 ± 90 ka were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis and X-ray Fluorescence in order to determine the origin as well as the climatic conditions during loess deposition. The presence of illite and calcite suggests reduced weathering, confirmed by climate proxies. Chemical Index of …
