  • Airborne laser scanning raster data visualization

Open Access•Žiga Kokalj, Ralf Hesse•BOOK•Airborne laser scanning raster…•2017

This guide provides an insight into a range of visualization techniques for high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs). It is provided in the context of investigation and interpretation of various types of historical and modern, cultural and natural small-scale relief features and landscape structures. It also provides concise guidance for selecting the best techniques when looking at a specific type of landscape and/or looking for particula…

  • Combining Structure-from-Motion with high and intermediate resolution satellite images to document threats to archaeological heritage in arid environments

  • Strict solar alignment of Bronze Age rock carvings in SE Sweden? – Critical remarks on an archaeoastronomical case study

    Open Access•Ralf Hesse•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 3

  • LiDAR‐derived Local Relief Models – a new tool for archaeological prospection

    Open Access•Ralf Hesse•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2010•Cited by: 68•References: 2

Local relief models (LRM) are proposed as a new tool for archaeological prospection. A data processing approach is presented which produces LRM from LiDAR‐derived high‐resolution digital elevation models (DEMs). The LRM represents local, small‐scale elevation differences after removing the large‐scale landscape forms from the data. The LRM greatly enhances the visibility of small‐scale, shallow topographic features irrespective of the illuminatio…

  • Using remote sensing to quantify aeolian transport and estimate the age of the terminal dune field Dunas Pampa Blanca in southern Peru

    Open Access•Ralf Hesse•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Aeolian dunes are widely used to reconstruct paleoenvironmental conditions. However, terminal dune fields (ergs) in the coastal desert of southern Peru – where information regarding Quaternary paleoenvironmental conditions is very limited – have until now not been used for paleoenvironmental reconstructions and the time depth of their accumulation is unknown. Here, different estimates are derived to constrain the time depth recorded in the Dunas …
