The role of women in the shaping of civic identity in Edwardian Leicester
This article analyses a case of female patronage in Edwardian Leicester, a drinking fountain surmounted by a statuette dedicated to a female Anglo-Saxon ruler. The article explores the cultural, social and gender implications of Gittins’ intentions behind the…

H‐nmr and 31 P‐nmr Characterization of the Lipid Fraction in Archaeological Ointments
Lipids are a broad group of naturally occurring molecules, which includes fats, oils, waxes, sterols, terpenes, fat‐soluble vitamins, monoglycerides, diglycerides, phospholipids and others. Lipids have been widely used in human history and they are often present in archaeological finds. In particular, in the field of medicine and cosmetics, lipids have been employed as base in the preparation of unguents, salves and balms. The characterization of…

We report a procedure for the virtual reconstruction of incomplete human bones applicable to skeletal remains from archaeological excavations or to reconstructive and prosthetic surgery. To test the procedure, we reconstructed a fragmented left clavicle on the basis of the contralateral clavicle. The procedure involved 3‐D laser scanner acquisition of the left clavicle (complete but broken into two parts), the same manually reconstructed bone, an…
