  • Dispersal history and bidirectional human-fish host switching of invasive, hypervirulent Streptococcus agalactiae sequence type 283

Open Access•Daniel Schar, Zhenyu Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Human group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections attributable to an invasive, hypervirulent sequence type (ST) 283 have been associated with freshwater fish consumption in Asia. The origin, geographic dispersion pathways and host transitions of GBS ST283 remain unresolved. We gather 328 ST283 isolate whole-genome sequences collected from humans and fish between 1998 and 2021, representing eleven countries across four continents. We apply Bayesian phy…

  • Evaluation of the pilot wastewater surveillance for Sars-CoV-2 in Norway, June 2022 – March 2023

Open Access•Ettore Amato, Susanne Hyllestad et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Our results showed that the pilot WWS system met most of its surveillance objectives. The system was able to provide an early warning signal of 1-2 weeks, and the system was useful to monitor infections at population level and complement routine surveillance when individual testing activity was low. However, temporary fluctuations of WWS values need to be carefully interpreted. To improve quality and efficiency, we recommend to standardise and va…

  • Cultura funk e subjetividades consumistas

  • Hypertension in Northern Angola

Open Access•João Pires, João E Pires et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Our survey is the first to provide insightful data on hypertension prevalence in Angola. There is an urgent need for strategies to improve prevention, diagnosis and access to adequate treatment in this country, where a massive economic growth and consequent potential impact on lifestyle risk factors could lead to an increase in the prevalence of hypertension and cardiovascular disease

  • Assessment of the Binder in Historical Mortars by Various Techniques

    Open Access•J Miranda, Ana P Carvalho et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2012•References: 6

Three different historical mortars, one from the 18th–19th centuries and two from the 12th century, were crushed and sieved to give eight fractions between less than 0.063 mm and 4 mm for each sample. Each fraction was chemically analysed for the amount of calcium carbonate binder, using the reactions with HCl and EDTA and by means of atomic absorption spectroscopy. The samples were also characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and by low‐tempera…

  • An Investigation of the Relationship between Students' Motivation and Academic Performance as Mediated by Effort

Open Access•Suki Goodman, Thania Jaffer et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 27

This study investigated the relationship between university students' motivation and their academic performance, with effort acting as a mediating variable. The study strives to add to the body of knowledge on motivation, effort and academic performance, with specific reference to tertiary level institutions in the South African context. Motivation is separated into intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation, which were used as the independent…
