Respect and agency
Both in social science and in everyday life, 'respect' is an important and widely used term to describe positive conduct of one person towards another. However, just what respectful behaviour refers to, and how it can be differentiated from considerate, tolerant, kind, etc. behaviour continues to elude social-scientific analysis. In order to investigate the meaning that people give to the concept of respect, the authors carried out focus groups i…
From Tolerance to Respect in Inter-Ethnic Contexts
When advocates of multiculturalism promote democratic values, they often call for tolerance and respect. The pairwise usage of these concepts wrongly presumes a similar, if not the same, positively connoted meaning. This article depicts an important difference between respect and tolerance, not only in terms of semantics but also regarding the concepts' impact on social interactions. Being tolerated often means to be 'put up with' or to be grudgi…

Georg Simmel's Aphorisms
This article contains an analysis of Georg Simmel's aphorisms and an appendix with a number of these in translation. An account is given of the production, publication and reception of the around 300 aphorisms that Simmel produced. His close relationship to Gertrud Kantorowicz is discussed, since she was given the legal right to many of Simmel's aphorisms when he died and also assigned the task of publishing them by Simmel. The main themes in Sim…
Three Problems of Intersubjectivity-And One Solution
Social thinkers often use the concept of intersubjectivity to mark out a problem of theoretical sociology: If people are unable to look into each others' minds, why do they often understand each other nonetheless? This issue has been debated extensively by philosophers and sociologists in three largely disconnected discourses. The article investigates the three discourses for isolable ideas that can be fitted into a sociological answer to the pro…
Blindness and the Interactional Emergence of Disability
By analysing interactions between blind and sighted individuals, this article shows that, under certain circumstances, the process of social interaction can identify blind participants not only as impaired, but also as disabled. When blind individuals interact with sighted strangers, they often need to ensure that the sighted people know about their condition. However, the very act of “communicating the impairment” may portray them as limited, ei…
The Notion of Equal Opportunity in Political Communication

Heuristics as Plausible Models of Rationality
