Migrant rent penalties in the German housing market
We investigate whether migrants pay higher rents for comparable housing than natives with similar characteristics using nationally representative data from the 2018 German Microcensus. The dataset enables us to adjust for all micro-level neighborhood characteristics of the dwelling by employing sampling district fixed-effects models and to simultaneously distinguish between migrant groups and generations. On average, across all origin groups and …
Familiäre Einbindung und soziale Kontakte von Menschen aus Syrien und Eritrea in Deutschland
Pre-existing company contacts and premature termination of apprenticeship training in Germany
The Role of Parents' Native and Migrant Contacts on the Labour Market in the School-to-Work Transition of Adolescents in Germany
This study investigates how parents' native and migrant contacts in the German labour market affect the likelihood of children obtaining a company-based apprenticeship [dual vocational education and training (VET)] after lower secondary education. Furthermore, it assesses the extent to which characteristics of parents' social networks explain ethnic inequalities in this school-to-work transition. Using longitudinal data from Starting Cohort 4 (ni…
Do Birth Order Effects on Secondary School Track Placement Differ Between Natives and Migrants? A Within-Family Analysis in the German Educational System
While existing research has found negative birth order effects on competences and educational attainment in various Western countries with different educational systems, it is unclear whether these findings also hold in families with migration background. We argue that in migrant families where children were born in the host country, birth order effects on secondary school track placement should be weak or even reversed. In these families, parent…
Why Do Friends Have Similar Educational Expectations? Separating Influence and Selection Effects
The influence of friends in shaping students' educational expectations has received considerable theoretical and empirical attention in past research. However, few studies have directly tackled the methodological problems associated with estimating such influence effects. In particular, the separation of selection effects-with students selecting friends with similar educational expectations-from influence effects has remained elusive. In this stu…
Die Schweizer Forschungsinfrastruktur ortsnamen.ch
The internet platform ortsnamen.ch (or toponymes.ch in French) hosts Swiss toponymic data from scientific sources. Its main purpose, especially in the beginning, was and is to archive regional toponymic projects and publish them online. Recently the platform has added significant new data sources to its database, and it has become bilingual with its new French version. In addition to its website, ortsnamen.ch also makes its data available through…
Das schulische Selbstkonzept von türkeistämmigen Neuntklässlern und von Neuntklässlern ohne Migrationshintergrund
The role of religion, religiousness and religious participation in the school-to-work transition in Germany
It is a well-established finding that in Europe migrants are less successful in the labour market than natives. This is especially true for migrants stemming from predominantly Muslim countries. Against this background, there is a strong interest in the role religion and religiosity plays for the structural integration of migrants. We add to this research by investigating the role of religious affiliation, private religiousness and public religio…

Does the Selectivity of an Educational System Affect Social Inequality in Educational Attainment? Empirical Findings for the Transition from Primary to Secondary Level in Germany
Previous research has shown that educational transitions are decisive for the explanation of social educational inequalities. One key factor for social-class-specific transitions at crucial branching points in the educational system is the difference in educational decisions of higher and lower social classes even at the same level of performance. Therefore, it is often assumed that an institutional setting in which families do not have a free ch…
Freiheit versus Gleichheit? / Freedom versus Equality
Effects of Social Networks on Finding an Apprenticeship in the German Vocational Training System
Previous research indicates that social relationships can influence the probability of successfully finding a first job. This paper contributes to this field of research by empirically analysing the rarely studied question, if social networks can help adolescents find an apprenticeship in the strongly company-based vocational training system of Germany. In contrast to most previous studies, not only the youth's networks, but also their mothers' n…
Söhne bevorzugt? Geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede beim Gymnasialbesuch türkischstämmiger Schülerinnen und Schülern
Attitudes and expectations
Previous international research has shown that educational goals are fundamental for explaining differences in the educational attainment between individuals. For a better understanding of educational inequality, it is therefore crucial to know more about the mechanisms leading to different expectations. Our paper contributes to this field of research by empirically testing how social networks affect educational expectations of mothers for their …
