  • Demographic Turbulence in the Arab World

    Open Access•Ian Pool•ARTICLE•Journal of Peacebuilding &…•2012•References: 4

The Arab Spring's hallmarks of volatility and ‘youthfulness’ thwart sustained development, political cohesion and peace. Demographic ‘youthfulness’, due to recent high fertility, is accompanied by rapid growth. But the backstory is even bleaker. Cohort flows, producing large population waves, batter successive life-cycle stages, generating demands for services, markets, resources and capital. To overcome this, policies directed at youth (15–24) a…

  • Population, Resources and Development

Open Access•D Ian Pool, Shripad Tuljapurkar et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Riding the age waves•2005

In the 21st century, the populations of the world’s nations will display large and long-lived changes in age structure. Many of these began with fertility change and are amplified by declining mortality and by migration within and between nations. Demography will matter in this century not by force of numbers, but by the pressures of waves of age structural change. Many developing countries are in relatively early stages of fertility decline and …

  • Social and Spatial Differentials in Age-Structural Transitions. Implications for Policies on Ageing

    Open Access•Marie-Claire Lepina, Ian Pool•ARTICLE•Espace populations sociétés•2000

Taking New Zealand as case-study, this paper shows that "ageing" involves far more than a simple shift from higher proportions of the total population at younger ages to the growth of concentrations at older ages. Yet, this is the model that often forms the base for policy-making. Instead, trajectories towards ageing (age-structural transitions) vary between national populations, and between regions within countries. Moreover, ageing per se will …

This important new book gives a thorough and very interesting survey of the history of the Maori population from earliest times to the present, concentrating particularly on the demographic impact of European colonization. It also considers present and future population trends, many of which have major implications for social and resource policy. Among questions explored are the marked fertility decline of the 1970s, urbanization, emigration, esp…

  • Social change, migration and pregnancy intervals

    Open Access•Ian Pool, J E Sceats et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1987

Maternity histories from residents of a Pacific Island society, Tokelau, and migrants to New Zealand, are analysed using life table techniques. Inter-cohort differentials in patterns of family formation were found in the total Tokelau-origin population. The process of accelerated timing and spacing of pregnancies was more pronounced among migrants who tended to marry later, be pregnant at marriage, have shorter inter-pregnancy intervals at lower …
