  • Herausforderung Solidarität

    Open Access•Kerstin Schmidt, Joost Van Loon•EDITOR•BOOK•Herausforderung Solidarität•2024

  • The role of cultural capital in life transitions among young intra-EU movers in Germany

    Mustafa Aksakal, Kerstin Schmidt•ARTICLE•New Community•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 24

The concepts of human and cultural capital represent two approaches for analysing the processes related to the accumulation and use of educational resources that are valuable for young movers. Many studies on youth mobility employing these approaches often do not sufficiently consider the existing barriers to cultural capital in different moments of life. This paper aims to scrutinise theses dynamics related to social inequalities in the accumula…

  • Soziologie der Migration

B Bilecen, Christian Ulbricht et al.•BOOK•Soziologie der Migration•2020

Migration is one of the most significant consequences of the change in our social order. Accordingly, the causes of migration as well as its impacts on education, the labor market, and politics are deserving of broad consideration. This textbook contextualizes issues related to migration using theory and concepts, introduces the reader to the relevant methodology, and provides examples of successful empirical research.

  • Picturing America

Kerstin Schmidt, Julia Isabel Faisst et al.•BOOK•Picturing America•2019

Picturing America: Photography and the Sense of Place argues that photography is a prevalent practice of making American places. Its collected essays epitomize not only how pictures situate us in a specific place, but also how they create a sense of such mutable place-worlds. Understanding photographs as prime sites of knowledge production and advocates of socio-political transformations, a transnational set of scholars reveals how images enact b…

  • Integration Needs and Support Offered

    Open Access•Mustafa Aksakal, Kerstin Schmidt•ARTICLE•International Migration•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 11

In this article we compare the perceived cultural integration challenges by young Spanish migrants in Germany with the support offered by one national government initiative and one local migrant organisation. Based on qualitative interviews, we identified four inequality‐related and interrelated challenges: personal relationships, housing, company culture and bureaucracy. Our findings show that MobiPro‐EU, as an example of a government initiative…

  • The meaning of farming beyond being a livelihood strategy

    Kerstin Schmidt•ARTICLE•International Review of Sociology•2019•References: 28

In this paper I argue that the cultural meaning of subsistence farming is at least equally important as its function as a livelihood strategy in rural Mexico for at least two reasons. First, subsistence farming is more or less important during different stages of people’s lives. Many young people, particularly men, intend to migrate to the USA for work and have little interest in farming, while older people keep up the tradition of farming the la…

  • Qualitative sampling in research on international student mobility

    Mustafa Aksakal, B Bilecen et al.•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Although over the past decades the numbers of studies investigating international student mobility and migration (ISM) increased, methodological challenges in empirical research on the topic have remained mainly unaddressed. This is particularly the case for sampling, which is a crucial but often less considered part of qualitative research designs. In this article, we identify three main challenges in qualitative sampling for research into ISM: …

  • Migration and Climate Change

Open Access•Richard Black, Dominic Kniveton et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2011•Cited by: 26•References: 33

This paper sets out a new approach to understanding the relationship between migration and climate change. Based on the understanding that migration is a significant, growing, but also complex phenomenon, this approach seeks to address the sensitivity of existing migration drivers in specific contexts to climate change. In contrast to existing approaches which have sought to generate global-level estimates of the numbers of 'climate migrants', th…

  • Climate Change and Migration

Dominic Kniveton, Kerstin Schmidt-Verkerk et al.•BOOK•Climate Change and Migration•2008

Recent empirical studies have found that climate variability and migration are characterized by a non-linear relationship. This study explores the climate change impacts on migratory processes. It outlines the key elements of natural and human induced climate change of potential relevance to migration, discusses the current state of debate about the relationship between climate change and migration, and describes possible approaches and methodolo…
