He leads a lonely life: Single Men's Narratives of Dating and Relationships in the Context of Transnational Migration
This paper presents findings from a qualitative research project examining the dating narratives of single migrant men residing in Sweden and Italy. The study, analyzing 48 interviews with individuals from Syrian, Polish, Bangladeshi and Romanian backgrounds, along with ethnographic observations, employs a theoretical framework rooted in sexual capital theory and critical studies on men and masculinities. The analysis sheds light on the challenge…
Aspirational Geographies: Intergenerational Dynamics of (Im)mobility Among Youth with Bangladeshi Origins in Rome
In this article, I deal with young people with Bangladeshi origins who want to remain in Rome in spite of a massive onward migration toward the United Kingdom that involved most of their friends. Based on ethnographic interviews, I show how the same aspirations of social mobility that their parents and many of their peers fulfilled thanks to spatial mobility are now being pursued by these youth through sedentarization processes. Their counternarr…
Claiming space in civil society. Young Muslim moral personhoods in Bangladesh and Italy
In this article we analyze the multi-layered engagements of young Muslim activists in Dhaka (Bangladesh) and in the 'Bangladeshi community' in Rome (Italy), illustrating how, despite the local factors shaping a problematic relationship between Islamic activism and civil society in the two contexts, the young people share an attitude that points to the manifestations of a public Islam on a global level. This attitude aims at transcending the secta…
Waiting or dating? Migrant bachelors in the European borderscapes
The article presents results from an interview study on migrant bachelors and discusses differences between Bangladeshi migrants in Italy and Syrian migrants in Sweden, in how they present as singles. Interviewees articulate a simplified distinction between singlehood in Europe and singlehood in Bangladesh or Syria. Singlehood has been theorized as wavering between a period of waiting and a lifestyle with its own inherent value. In our sample, wh…
A Not-so-Islamic Utopia: The Dialectic between Realism and Messianism among Young Muslims in Rome
Despite the existence of a variegated literary tradition and the almost complete absence of field research on the subject, the notion of utopia in the Muslim world is generally associated with an 'Islamic utopia' that aims to reinstate the societal model of early Muslims. Based on ethnographic research among young Italian-Bangladeshis, this article suggests that 'retro-utopia' and religious repertoires more generally do not represent the only res…
Banglascapes in Southern Europe: Im-mobilities, emplacements, temporalities
This special issue stems from a panel we organised at the European Conference on South Asian Studies in 2018, under the title ‘Banglascapes in Southern Europe: comparative perspectives’. Not all the panel participants from that conference feature in this special issue, and not all the authors included here were present at the conference. Nevertheless, the panel represents a first important moment in which we began to collect case-studies and insi…
Young people first! The multiple inscriptions of a generational discourse of Muslimness among Italian-Bangladeshi youths
‘Our parents couldn’t teach us the true meaning of what spirituality and faith can be!’. This assertion, made by a 24-year-old youth, epitomises the critical stance of a group of young Italian-Bangladeshi Muslims towards the religiosity oftheir former generation. Based on ethnographic research in Rome (Italy), this article illustrates the apparently oxymoroniccharacteristics of a discourse of Muslimness which, despite stressing the importance of …
Psychological Health Status of Psychiatric Patients Living in Treatment Communities before and during the Covid-19 Lockdown: A Brief Report
Many studies investigated the psychological impact of lockdown measures on the general population, while few studies focused on the psychiatric population. This study aimed to investigate the role of therapeutic communities in the management and containment of symptoms of patients with psychosis living in psychiatric residential facilities. Data were collected at two different points: November 2019 (Coronavirus disease 19 had not yet spread) and …
