Culture in transition: Awareness and appropriate response to domestic violence among Hmong American college students
This explanatory study examined Hmong college students’ experience, awareness, and appropriate response to domestic violence in the Hmong community, using a survey (n = 231) at one of the largest Hmong-serving institutions in the United States. Findings indicated that 32.8% of Hmong college women had some violence from their romantic partners and two thirds of Hmong college men and women were aware of violence in the Hmong community. Crime and response in rural Japan
The community policing system, which has long been a defining feature of Japan's low-crime society, no longer has sufficient staffing and resources in rural areas to maintain its prior levels of efficiency and effectiveness. The population trends have left rural Japan with a number of challenges. Senior citizens in rural Japan are more likely to live alone without ties to family, which makes them more vulnerable to new types of fraud such as Ore …
Disproportionate Minority Contact in a Latino Majority County: A Descriptive Study
This study describes the process of disproportionate minority contact (DMC) within Fresno County (California), a majority Latino county. Although Latinos are the largest minority group in America, the majority of DMC research has compared Blacks to Whites. This study adds more detail to the discussion by examining the distribution of all youth groups across several juvenile justice measures within Fresno County. Our findings support our speculati…
Estimation of caffeine intake in Japanese adults using 16 d weighed diet records based on a food composition database newly developed for Japanese populations
Objective Previous studies in Western populations have linked caffeine intake with health status. While detailed dietary assessment studies in these populations have shown that the main contributors to caffeine intake are coffee and tea, the wide consumption of Japanese and Chinese teas in Japan suggests that sources of intake in Japan may differ from those in Western populations. Among these teas, moreover, caffeine content varies widely among t…
Monetary cost of self-reported diet in relation to biomarker-based estimates of nutrient intake in young Japanese women
Objective All previous studies on monetary diet cost have examined the relationship of monetary cost of self-reported diet to self-reported, rather than biomarker-based, estimates of dietary intake. The present cross-sectional study examined the association between monetary costs of self-reported diet and biomarker-based estimates of nutrient intake. Design Monetary diet cost (Japanese yen/1000 kJ) was calculated based on dietary intake informati…
Monetary cost of dietary energy is negatively associated with BMI and waist circumference, but not with other metabolic risk factors, in young Japanese women
Objective Little is known about the relationship of dietary cost to health status. The present cross-sectional study examined the association between the monetary cost of dietary energy (Japanese yen/4184 kJ) and several metabolic risk factors. Design Monetary cost of dietary energy was estimated based on dietary intake assessed by a self-administered diet history questionnaire and retail food prices. Body height and weight, from which BMI was de…
Iron intake does not significantly correlate with iron deficiency among young Japanese women: A cross-sectional study
Objectives We evaluated the association of nutrient intake with Fe deficiency with regard to lifestyle factors and health condition in young Japanese women. Uniquely among developed countries, dietary habits render Japanese populations vulnerable to Fe deficiency, owing to their relatively low intake of Fe and high intake of Fe absorption inhibitors, such as green tea and soyabeans. Design A cross-sectional study. Setting and subjects The subject…
Relationship between soy and isoflavone intake and periodontal disease: The Freshmen in Dietetic Courses Study II
Our findings suggest that soy and isoflavone intake may decrease the likelihood of periodontal disease. Further investigations with objective measures for periodontal disease are needed to confirm our findings
Monetary costs of dietary energy reported by young Japanese women: Association with food and nutrient intake and body mass index
Objective Little is known about the relationship of monetary diet costs to dietary intake and obesity, particularly in non-Western populations. This study examined monetary cost of dietary energy in relation to diet quality and body mass index (BMI) among young Japanese women. Design Dietary intake was assessed by a validated, self-administered, diet history questionnaire. Diet costs were estimated using retail food prices. Monetary cost of dieta…
Recommunalization of the disenfranchised: A theoretical and critical criminological inquiry
This article examines the eight-stage model of recommunalizing the homeless in a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) as developed by Arrigo and its theoretical grounding, based on principles derived from critical criminology. In particular, by retrospectively identifying how several key concepts emanating from peacemaking, anarchist and cultural criminology are illustrated by the SRO’s formation and operation, the article demonstrates where and how the d…
