  • Pain, Injury, Mortality

Open Access•Robert Werling, Amanda Figueiredo Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018•References: 1

Previous research has shown that the law enforcement occupation is a dangerous profession that has the highest violent victimization rate in the United States (Fridell, Faggiani, Taylor, Brito, & Kubu, 2009). This descriptive study aims to add to the growing body of literature on victimization of police officers by answering the central research question: What are the characteristics of victimization incidents of on-duty law enforcement officers?…

  • Citizen Opinion Survey

Open Access•Robert Werling, Sriram Chintakrindi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018•References: 6

Successful community policing is, in part, dependent on the community’s perception of their police officers. The police department of a mid-sized community in California’s Central Valley conducted a survey to gain some measure of the citizen’s perception of their police. The survey was conducted in conjunction with a nearby California State University. The results of the survey are being used to make revisions in the policies and procedures of th…

  • Was pet relinquishment related to foreclosure

    Open Access•Gregory D Morris, Jennifer Steffler•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2011•References: 1

Media reports asserted that the 2008 foreclosure crisis unleashed a rash of pet relinquishments, especially in California's central valley, an area that had the highest U.S. foreclosure rates that year. However, reports on the foreclosure/relinquishment association relied on anecdotal evidence provided by animal shelters, which is known to be flawed since many people do not give a reason for relinquishment, or give a false reason. This study comp…

  • Delinquency and Non-Reservation American Indians

Gregory D Morris, Peter B Wood•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal…•2010

Using a sample of 382 American Indian public high school students, we compare unique (Native traditionalism) and general (parental control and self-control) influences on interpersonal and property delinquency. Results indicate that these 3 predictors more or less independently predict each form of delinquency, suggesting that non-reservation American Indian delinquency is the product of both unique and general influences. Contrary to expectation…

  • Traditionalism or Low Self-Control

    Open Access•Gregory D Morris, Peter B Wood et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Using a sample of American Indian high school students, we test self-control and Native traditionalism as predictors of their health-risk behaviors. Regression analyses found self-control to be a significant influence on all seven health-risk items as well as the health-risk composite. Traditionalism by and large fails to influence these behaviors. However, the traditionalism measure serves a second purpose as a means of controlling for cultural …
