Designing a graduate-level peer-wellness mentoring course
Background: A growing body of research has indicated the importance of implementing community mental health initiatives in universities to promote student mental health and well-being. Designing and implementing community-based initiatives on campus can facilitate improved student well-being in a cost-effective way. Purpose: This paper provides a description of the implementation of a graduate-level university course grounded in a community menta…
Using Language to Test Developmental Differences in Attitudes Toward Solitude in Adolescents and Emerging Adults
The goal of this study was to assess developmental differences in adolescents’ and emerging adults’ attitudes toward solitude using three different methodologies. Participants were N = 1224 adolescents ( n = 367, ages 15–18 years, M age = 16.13, SD = 0.54; 65.7% female) and emerging adults ( n = 857, aged 18–29 years, M age = 19.75 years, SD = 2.28; 70.2% female). Participants completed a rating scale assessing explicit attitudes towards solitude…
I speak to the trees because nature is my friend: Conceptualization and assessment of connection to nature in solitude
A Community Mental Health and Well-Being University Level Course: Design and Implementation
Background: Community mental health is growing discipline in psychology that recognizes the importance of creating a community that fosters wellness. Although universities provide many individuals a sense of community, little research has examined how community mental health interventions can be implemented into a classroom setting. Purpose: This paper provides a proof of concept of a university course that was created to give students the opport…
Overcoming the challenge of a visible facial difference at interview: Prefamiliarization can be effective
The relationship between attitudes to human rights and to animal rights is partially mediated by empathy
Veganism has become increasingly popular in recent years in many countries including the UK and the USA. Studies have found that vegans tend to be female, lower in Right-Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) and Social Dominance Orientation (SDO), and higher in feminist perspectives (FPS). Study 1 (n = 311) investigated the relationships among meat consumption, ethical veganism (using a custom-written scale), RWA, SDO, and FPS, in a series of questionnaire…
Negative perceptions of people with facial disfigurement depend on a general attitude rather than on specific concerns
Student Perceptions of Academic Integrity: A Qualitative Study of Understanding, Consequences, and Impact
Changing Negative Perceptions of Individuals With Facial Disfigurement: The Effectiveness of a Brief Intervention
Can a brief personal narrative by an individual with facial disfigurement enhance perceptions of their skills and personality? Participants (n = 224) mainly from Europe and the USA completed the study online. Four experimental conditions presented either a video clip or the audio soundtrack, relating either a positive message or a message about overcoming adversity. In the control condition, participants viewed a still facial photograph. Evaluati…
Not all eyewitnesses are equal: Accent status, race and age interact to influence evaluations of testimony
Extralegal factors such as accent status, race and age may affect how someone is perceived in courtrooms. Even eyewitnesses who are not on trial may be rated less favorably as a result of such features. The current study measured accent status, race and age with 254 participants listening to oral witness statements. Results indicate eyewitnesses with higher-status accents were rated more favorably than those with lower-status accents and younger …
Emotional responses to disfigured faces and Disgust Sensitivity: An eye-tracking study
Facial disfigurement attracts attention and evokes negative emotion, but evidence is lacking for a link between these two reactions. The present experiment ( n = 29) investigated emotional and attentional reactions to photographs of people with disfigured faces. An eye-tracker was used to measure fixation on internal expressive features and on the forehead. Disfigurement to the internal expressive features invoked a stronger emotional reaction th…
Rational Thinking and Belief in Psychic Abilities: It Depends on Level of Involvement
Previous research has shown that lay believers in psychic abilities are more prone to intuitive thinking, less inclined to rational thinking, and have an external locus of control, compared to non-believers. Psychic practitioners, however, may have different characteristics. Psychic practitioners ( n = 31; M age = 42.7 yr., SD = 13.1), lay believers ( n = 33; M age = 33.0 yr., SD = 10.3), and non-believers ( n = 31; M age = 34.4 yr., SD = 15.4) c…
An Avowal of Prior Scepticism Enhances the Credibility of an Account of a Paranormal Event
Wooffitt suggested that a narrator may enhance the plausibility of an account of an ostensibly paranormal event by making an avowal of prior scepticism but empirical support to date is lacking. In Experiment 1, participants read a first-person narrated scenario implicitly suggesting either telepathy or precognition as a causal explanation, then answered questions about the event and the narrator. The causal attribution to telepathy/precognition w…
Accuracy of familiarity decisions to famous faces perceived without awareness depends on attitude to the target person and on response latency
Strength of visual percept generated by famous faces perceived without awareness: Effects of affective valence, response latency, and visual field
