Reading Early Agriculture at Kuk Swamp, Wahgi Valley, Papua New Guinea
Multi-disciplinary field investigations were undertaken in 1972–7 and 1998–9 at Kuk Swamp in the upper Wahgi Valley in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Multi-period finds dating from the early Holocene to the recent past and interpreted to represent human manipulation of a wetland margin for plant exploitation were documented. A brief history of archaeological work in northwest Queensland
In recent years there has been a sharp increase in interest in the archaeology of Northwest Queensland. The area has hitherto been neglected by archaeologists due to both the prohibitive cost of fieldwork and the coastal orientation of archaeological questions in Australia. The following summary is presented to inform QAR readers of the work that has been undertaken in the area and that which is still in progress. The geographical area of concern…
The Stuarts Point Shell Midden Complex
The Stuarts Point shell midden complex is located to the west of the mouth of the Macleay River in northern New South Wales. This group of middens has been mapped and recorded in the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Aboriginal Sites file as extending over 2.5 km through Portions 125, 146, 186 and R-5497 Parish of Clybucca

Backed Blades in Northern Australia
The discovery of backed blades in the Lawn Hills-Colless Creek gorge area of the northwest Queensland is discussed though these blades have generally been found in the south. The new data presented in this paper is likely to have far reaching consequences for the interpretation of Australian prehistory especially the 'small toll tradition
Pleistocene Occupation of the Arid Zone in Southeast Australia
A number of reasons why the Strzelecki Desert-Cooper creek area should be a highly suitable place in which to begin systematically seeking evidence for Pleistocene occupation in the arid zone of the southeastern part of Australia and its semi-arid fringes are provided where original archeological material in Pleistocene deposits have been found. Pleistocene Archaeology in the Flinders Range
Research is conducted in the early stone industry known as the Kartan in the Flinders Range to study its dating and associations. In the northern Flinders range and along creeks near the shores of Lake Frome, there are sites of at least reasonable antiquity some of which have artefacts in their natural form in Pleistocene deposits dating back to 20,000 BP and the tools they contain could be a local expression of the Kartan industry
The Appearance of Plant and Animal Domestication in New Guinea
search Station in the upper Wahgi valley, Western Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea, are interpreted as indicating the beginning of agriculture in the region at about 9 000 years BP. The deposits in the swamp register an episode of accelerated erosion in the catchments explained as due to forest clearance for gardening. Are There Prehistoric Shell Middens on Rottnest Island
In August 1973, during a one-day bike and bus tour of Rottnest Island, we observed a number of different types of shell bed. The most massive of these were seen around the lakes at the eastern end of the island and there is no doubt that these are natural marine shell beds. However elsewhere shelly deposits were seen whose origin we could not determine with certainty
