Rethinking “governance through goals”
Much More Than Firewood
The use of firewood as an energetic resource in various rural regions of the world is essential for the satisfaction of basic human needs. However, the role of firewood in domestic life and its link to household well-being and food sovereignty have been poorly addressed. In order to investigate these aspects, an ethnobotanical study was carried out in three socio-environmental systems of Argentina ( Chaco, Pampa, and Patagonia). Quantitative and …
Returning Individual Tap Water Testing Results to Research Study Participants after a Wildfire Disaster
After the devastating wildfire that destroyed most of the town of Paradise, California in 2018, volatile organic compounds were found in water distribution pipes. Approximately 11 months after the fire, we collected tap water samples from 136 homes that were still standing and tested for over 100 chemicals. Each participant received a customized report showing the laboratory findings from their sample. Our goal was to communicate individual water…
Waterscapes in Wallmapu
This article reflects on the multiple worlds generated around waterscapes in the diverse Mapuche territory, Wallmapu. We contrast the responses of three Mapuche communities to external interventions and water availability in the Chimehuin and Lepá rivers in Argentina, and the Huenehue River in Chile. The comparison reveals the nature of Mapuche waterscapes, the tensions provoked by the global economy, and its impacts on water management. Mapuche …
Cross-scale analysis of diversification processes in fuelwood use in three contrasting ecoregions of Argentina (Chaco, Pampa and Patagonia)
Fuelwood is one of the main sources of energy for rural populations in many environments and ecosystems. However, little research has been done on the diversification processes associated with the use of woody plants for fuel (UWPF). This study was carried out in rural communities of three eco-regions of Argentina (the phytogeographical provinces of Chaco, Pampa and Patagonia). Open and semi-structured interviews were performed in 72 households, …
Seasonal Variation in the consumption of biomass fuel in a rural community of arid Patagonia, Argentina
The use of biomass as an energy resource is key to the subsistence and development of diverse rural populations throughout the world.Particularly, the study of seasonal variation in firewood consumption contributes knowledge that can be used in detailed community management of this resource. In a rural community of the Patagonian steppe, seasonal variation in domestic consumption of fuel plants was studied.Possible socioeconomic conditioning facto…
A biocultural and intercultural response to firewood scarcity in rural communities inhabiting arid environments in Patagonia (Argentina)
From an ecological perspective, the use of firewood species implies constant disturbance of the vegetation, but from a biocultural point of view the implications are more systemic and complex. The objective of this work was to make a comprehensive analysis of the biocultural characteristics of firewood plants used by two rural communities in arid Patagonia, with special emphasis on their tolerance of continuous extraction, recovery of the environ…
