Mapping from spatial meaning: Bridging Hñahñu (Otomi) ecological knowledge and geo-information tools
BackgroundHñahñu (Otomi) farmers organize their experiences and ecological learning into a farmland system designed to grow food in areas of scarce water and low soil fertility. The purpose of this paper is to examine Hñahñu concepts and categories pertaining to the farming landscape and the ecological foundations underlying the system, its management implications, and categorial organization in Huitexcalco de Morelos, Mezquital Valley, Mexico.Me…
Validating the use of object-based image analysis to map commonly recognized landform features in the United States
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Geospatial Program (NGP) seeks to i) create semantically accessible terrain features from the pixel-based 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) data, and ii) enhance the usability of the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) by associating boundaries with GNIS features whose spatial representation is currently limited to 2D point locations. Geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) was determined t…

Patterns of financial attributes and behaviors of emerging adults in the United States
Differentiated livelihoods, local institutions, and the adaptation imperative: Assessing climate change adaptation policy in Tanzania
Integrated development, risk management and community-based climate change adaptation in a mountain-plains system in Northern Tanzania
This paper presents a preliminary analysis of work conducted along altitudinal gradients in the mountains and plains of northern Tanzania. We find evidence of a high degree of interdependence among groups of people of different language/cultural groups and socio-economic status interacting along environmental gradients from high to low altitude. We call this “socio-geographical adaptation” to climate change. However, our analysis and discussion a…
On désignera cela « adaptation socio-géographique…
Cognition-Based Extraction and Modelling of Topographic Eminences
Terrain is generally stored in GIS as an elevation field, whereas human cognition of the landscape is usually object based. To address this mismatch of terrain data models, we propose object-based terrain representation, using topographic eminences, which are landforms that rise up conspicuously from the ground to visibly dominate the landscape, to illustrate our case. We propose a cognition-based methodology for automated detection and delineati…
