The Aids Drug Assistance Program Is a Model for Chronic Disease Treatment Support
Barriers and facilitators to implementing evidence-based integrated HIV and behavioral health care
The federal Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative was created to reduce new US HIV infections, largely through pre-exposure prophylaxis and HIV treatments that reduce HIV transmissibility to zero. Behavioral health disorders (mental health and substance use) remain significant barriers to achieving EHE goals. Addressing behavioral health (BH) disorders within HIV primary care settings has been promoted as a critical EHE strategy. Implementatio…
Using Dictator Game Experiments to Learn About Charitable Giving
The dictator game has become a celebrated workhorse of experimental economics and social psychology. In the standard version of the game an individual is given a sum of money and must choose how to split this money between themselves and some other individual. In a variant of the game the individual must split the money between themselves and a charitable cause. This charity version of the dictator game has now been used in well over fifty studie…
A population history of Tokelau – genetic variation and change in atoll populations
Tokelau is a remote archipelago of atolls in western Polynesia, located approximately 500 km north of Samoa. It is thought to have been settled as part of the Austronesian expansion(s). However, its exact role in this population dispersal is not completely understood. Here we describe the results of complete mitochondrial genome sequencing for both the current inhabitants and ancient individuals from the archipelago in addition to an assessment o…
Medicinal plant use in two Tiwi Island communities
Background Traditional medicinal plants are still used today in many Aboriginal communities across Australia. Our research focused on the contemporary use of such plants in the two communities within the Tiwi Islands, Wurrumiyanga and Pirlangimpi. Methods This qualitative research project performed a video ethnography, community interviews, and a trial intervention to better understand the extent to which these plants are still used throughout th…
Why Visual Ethnography Should Be Used to Incorporate Traditional Knowledge Into Health Promotion in Remote Aboriginal Communities
Health promotion within Aboriginal communities has typically come from a top-down approach with government-funded health research directing the nature in which health information is disseminated. Previous literature has argued for two-way interaction that requires an equivalent bottom-up approach to integrate community beliefs and perceptions. Good hygiene has been the focus of many health promotion campaigns to reduce the presence of a wide vari…
First Radiocarbon Chronology for Mwoakilloa (Mokil) Atoll, Eastern Caroline Islands, Micronesia
Given their sheer number and evidence for long-term prehistoric occupation, atolls occupy a unique position in the peopling of the Pacific. However, they have frequently been overlooked in favor of larger islands due to a host of logistical and other issues. Once viewed as marginal environments, current research is now showing that small islands like these may have been more attractive to settlers than once thought. A new research program in Micr…
Risk indicators associated with injection drug use in the Aboriginal population
In 2009, the incidence of positive HIV tests in the Saskatoon Health Region, Canada, was 31.3 per 100,000 population when the national average was only 9.3 per 100,000 population. A majority of the positive HIV tests were of Aboriginal cultural status with a majority of those associated with injection drug use (IDU). The main objective of the study was to determine the risk indicators independently associated with higher rates of IDU in the Abori…
