  • Implications of federalism

Open Access•Roland Kraxner, Thomas E Dorner et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background Austria’s nine federal states are responsible for healthcare provision, particularly hospital services. However, differences in political arrangements between states have resulted in spatial disparities in healthcare. This study evaluated whether the utilisation of primary and secondary healthcare services showed regional differences over time. Methods This analysis was based on data from the most recent Austrian Health Interview Surve…

  • Theoretically Universal, Practically Unequal

    Open Access•Peter Gamillscheg, Peter Gamillscheg‐Müllner et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2026

BACKGROUND: Long Covid-19 (LC) patients have substantial treatment and care needs, yet research has shown that the majority of them experience healthcare access barriers. While qualitative studies indicate socio-economic and demographic access inequalities among LC patients, quantitative evidence remains limited. This study aims to assess socio-economic inequalities in healthcare access among LC patients in Austria, focusing on self-perceived bar…

Open Access•Silvia Wojczewski, Simona Ďurišová et al.•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2026

Apart from this, care workers often face challenging working conditions in many countries. This article examines the job profile, needs, and training preferences of migrant live‐in care workers in Austria to inform improvements to their working and living conditions. As part of a transdiscipli…

  • Insights into general practitioners’ self-care across 38 countries during the pandemic

Open Access•Ivana Keenan, Esther Van Poel et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2024

GPs have navigated the pandemic uniquely, and despite applying self-care practices they faced some level of impact, hence self-care interventions for healthcare professionals should be regarded as essential rather than optional. A long-term investment in strategies focused on improving GPs' self-care is necessary to increase resilience among GPs and ensure their optimal well-being levels are achieved

  • Barriers and facilitators of healthcare access for long Covid-19 patients in a universal healthcare system

Open Access•Peter Gamillscheg, Agata Łaszewska et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2024

The findings of this study indicate a call for action to improve the long COVID-19 situation in Austria by empowering both providers and patients via increased information offerings, strengthened interdisciplinary treatment structures and telemedicine offerings as well as research funding. Our insights on potentially relevant socioeconomic and demographic drivers in access barriers lay the necessary foundation for future quantitative inequality r…

  • A bit of a cough, tired, not very resilient – is that already Long-Covid?” perceptions and experiences of GPs with Long-Covid in year three of the pandemic. a qualitative interview study in Austria

Open Access•Silvia Wojczewski, Mira Mayrhofer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Long-COVID will continue to preoccupy our health care systems for a long time to come, as new variants of COVID-19 will continue to produce new patients without adequate prevention strategies. Therefore, it is not a question of if but when good support for GPs and adequate care pathways for people with Long-COVID will be implemented. Specific contact points that are familiar with therapy-refractory postacute infection syndromes like the postacute…

  • Responding to Covid-19

Open Access•Adam Windak, Katarzyna Nessler et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

COVID-19 proved that primary care (PC) providers have an important role in managing health emergencies, such as epidemics. Little is known about the preparedness of primary care practice infrastructure to continue providing high quality care during this crisis. The aim of this paper is to describe the perceived limitations to the infrastructure of PC practices during COVID-19 and to determine the factors associated with a higher likelihood of inf…

  • Beyond the “information deficit model” - understanding vaccine-hesitant attitudes of midwives in Austria

Open Access•Lisa Lehner, Janna Gribi et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Research shows that, for parents, vaccine decision-making builds on trust and dialogue with healthcare professionals and is more than a technical issue. In order to foster these interactions, understanding healthcare professionals' means of engaging with information is key to understanding how they engage with their constituents. Healthcare workers are more than neutral resources; their daily praxis influenced by their professional standing in th…

  • Gender differences in self-care for common colds by primary care patients

Robert D Hoffman, Anika Thielmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Gender Studies•2021•References: 57

Although generally harmless, the common cold disturbs the lives of billions yearly. It is frequently treated by self-care, yet little is known about the effect gender may have on self-care. Our study set out to discover whether self-care for common colds differs by gender. We also wanted to test the ‘Man cold’ belief: that men ‘break down’ when they have a cold and suffer more than women when they are sick. We distributed questionnaires asking fo…

Open Access•Christos Lionis, Elena Petelos et al.•ARTICLE•BMC International Health and…•2018

The current political crisis, conflicts and riots in many Middle Eastern and African countries have led to massive migration waves towards Europe. European countries, receiving these migratory waves as first port of entry (POE) over the past few years, were confronted with several challenges as a result of the sheer volume of newly arriving refugees. This humanitarian refugee crisis represents the biggest displacement crisis of a generation. Alth…

  • Associations between the prevalence of influenza vaccination and patient’s knowledge about antibiotics

Open Access•Kathryn Hoffmann, Evelien ME van Bijnen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

The results of this study demonstrate that vaccination prevalence is associated with patient's knowledge about antibiotics. It can be concluded that one strategy to improve the overall low vaccination rates for seasonal influenza in Austria would be, particularly for male GPs, to have a specific discussion with patients about these circumstances by focusing on younger patients. Further, public health efforts could supplement in-office strategies …
