Transforming services in partnership with service users and carers to co-develop the new Integrated Care System for Northern Ireland (ICSNI)
This transformation programme will see the development of a new commissioning framework model for Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland. Service users and carers are at the heart of this, working in partnership with other key stakeholders. The new Integrated Care System for Northern Ireland (ICSNI) is streamlining structures and enhancing local level decision-making to commission care and services which will address the whole life course fro…
A State of (Dis)unity and Uncertain Belonging
This article examines how existing in a larger socio-political environment of contested national belonging shapes Muslims’ experiences in the Central African Republic ( car ). We draw on data gathered between 2017 and 2019 from various archival sources and in-depth interviews with Muslim religious leaders and non-Muslims in car ’s capital, Bangui. We argue that through claims to autochthony a dual logic of exclusion co-occurs which shapes how Mus…
Developmental Sequences in Second Language Phonology
This study investigates the effects of three types of instruction on the acquisition of foreign /s/-initial onset clusters (/sl/, /sn/, and /st/-sC clusters), a process characterized by a developmental sequence in which /sl/ is acquired before /sn/ and /st/. 118 native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese participated in a 4-week language course to learn a set of vocabulary and associated pronunciation of Taki, a self-constructed miniature linguistic…
Research agenda
We propose five research tasks targeting grammar teaching and learning, focusing on extending previous research and exploring under-studied features and contexts. The first two tasks outline replications and extensions of seminal studies on pedagogical grammar, Toth (2008) and Samuda (2001), designed to advance our understanding of the teacher role in providing rich practice opportunities. Another task examines how features of peer interaction du…
Form‐Focused Instruction
Form‐focused instruction (FFI) refers to any pedagogical practice aimed at drawing learners' attention to language form. The “form” may consist of phonological (sound), morphosyntactic (word form, word order), lexical, pragmatic, discourse, or orthographical aspects of language. The term owes its origin to a distinction between focus on forms , where a set of predetermined features (e.g., articles, verb tenses) is taught and practiced, and focus …
A ‘brown envelope’ intervention for digital professionalism training
Reports are emerging that since the publication of regulating bodies guidance on using social media, there have been small, but rising numbers of Fitness to Practise cases made against health care professionals relating to its use. Digital professionalism training is increasingly recognised as an important part of the undergraduate curriculum, but more work is required to determine the most effective way do this. In our Faculty, initial pedagogic…
Rethinking Genocide, Mass Atrocities, and Political Violence in Africa
Are conflicts dynamic processes? Though seemingly answered with a simple yes, the tendency at times to analyze and thereafter market complex conflict processes based on discrete categories of violence exposes a shortcoming in current analyses of conflict throughout the African continent. This not only suggests the need to problematize the very analytical frames employed to understand conflicts and how we respond to violence, but also interrogate …
Gender differences in perpetuating factors, experience and management of chronic insomnia
The higher prevalence of insomnia in women has been attributed to biological factors, which are less likely than cognitive and behavioral factors to play a role in perpetuating insomnia. Gender differences in perpetuating factors have not been extensively examined. This study compared men's and women's self-reports of factors that perpetuate insomnia; experience of symptoms, perceived severity and impact on daytime functioning; and use of strateg…
Interventions to address social connectedness and loneliness for older adults
BACKGROUND: Older adults are at risk for loneliness, and interventions to promote social connectedness are needed to directly address this problem. The nature of interventions aimed to affect the distinct, subjective concepts of loneliness/social connectedness has not been clearly described. The purpose of this review was to map the literature on interventions and strategies to affect loneliness/social connectedness for older adults. METHODS: A c…

Sex Before the Law
Until recently, transgender plaintiffs claiming sex discrimination were successful only when the discrimination was argued to be based on the plaintiff’s birth sex. Schroer v. Billington is often mistakenly understood to have been decided based on a more expansive understanding of sexed identity. Here, I call upon stasis theory to highlight how Schroer shifts the focus on sex away from sexed identities to structure, calling attention to how sex a…

The Second Amendment as Demanding Subject
n American politics, we often equate rights, particularly constitutional rights, with freedom. It is as if we can discern how free we are by how well our constitutional rights are preserved. Political theorist Linda Zerilli cautions against such thinking: When rights become institutionalized, we tend to forget their origin in a radical, ungrounded claim to freedom, to non-domination and to equal participation in public affairs. We tend to become …
Form‐Focused Instruction
The term form‐focused instruction describes any pedagogical practice undertaken by second language (L2) teachers with the goal of drawing their students' attention to language form.
A Frequency‐Based Approach to L2 Phonological Learning
An Intensive Look at Intensity and Language Learning
In this longitudinal study we investigated whether different distributions of instructional time would have differential effects on the acquisition of English by young (aged 11–12 years) French‐speaking learners. Eleven classes of Grade 6 students ( N = 230) in two versions of a similar intensive English as a second language program were followed throughout their intensive experience. In one program, the 400 hours of instruction were concentrated…
Lexical Frequency Profiles and Zipf's Law
Laufer and Nation (1995) proposed that the Lexical Frequency Profile (LFP) can estimate the size of a second-language writer's productive vocabulary. Meara (2005) questioned the sensitivity and the reliability of LFPs for estimating vocabulary sizes, based on the results obtained from probabilistic simulations of LFPs. However, the underlying mathematical model for the simulations, based on Zipf's law, allows such an analysis to be done directly,…
‘It's vocabulary’/‘it's gender’
Research has shown that second language (L2) learners that become aware of linguistic features during grammar-based tasks are better able to process these features on a posttest compared to learners that do not focus on these features. However, much L2 input does not come in the form of grammar-based tasks. This study investigates whether learners who become aware of French grammatical gender during a meaning-based task are better able to process…
Linking languages through a bilingual read-aloud project
The present study was carried out in French immersion classrooms in an urban Quebec school board that is increasingly characterised by the heterogeneity of its French-dominant, English-dominant, and French/English bilingual student population. The study explored the extent to which a bilingual read-aloud project would (1) raise teachers' awareness of the bilingual resources of their students, (2) encourage students' cross-linguistic collaboration…
The influence of language distance and language status on the acquisition of L3 phonology
Research in the field of third language acquisition has consistently identified two key factors which have an effect on the ways in which the two known languages may influence the acquisition of a third. These factors are language distance (typology) and language status (more specifically, second language, L2, or non-native language status). To date, however, the findings have not been conclusive regarding whether one of the two factors has a gre…
The His / Her Challenge
This paper reports on two studies that investigated the effectiveness of a contrastive analysis type of pedagogical intervention, which aimed to promote interlanguage development in the use and understanding of English possessive determiners (PDs) among adolescent second language (L2) learners. The first research question asked whether explicit instruction involving a rule of thumb, contrastive information and repeated contextualised practice of …
Accessing Second Language Learners’ Understanding of Temporal Morphology
The purpose of this study was to investigate how retrospective verbal reports can contribute to our understanding of the factors influencing the interlanguage development of tense and grammatical aspect. The goal was to gain insights into (1) the mental representations second language learners hold of tense and grammatical aspect, and (2) the factors influencing how knowledge of temporal morphology develops and is accessed during real-time produc…
The Roles of L1 Influence and Lexical Aspect in the Acquisition of Temporal Morphology
Two cross-sectional studies (N= 70; N= 91) used a replication design to investigate the degree to which adult Francophone ESL learners' use of tense/aspect markers in past contexts supported the predictions of the aspect hypothesis (Andersen & Shirai, 1994; Bardovi-Harlig, 1994) and the degree to which it showed L1 influence. Consistent with the aspect hypothesis, the learners were significantly more successful in using simple past with telics, s…
