Long-distance jade exchange, linguistic boundaries, and migration in pre-contact western Canada
Nephrite (jade) was used for over 3000 years in western North America to make ground stone celts, some of which were transported over one thousand kilometers across boundaries of Indigenous languages and ecological regions. We employ archaeometric means to confirm nephrite identification and plot all known archaeological occurrences east of the Rocky Mountains. Nephrite celts are among the most widely dispersed artifacts in pre-contact Canada but…
Beyond the ‘bitter bread of dependence’
This essay explores the opportunities and challenges presented by the ready-made garment trade for women’s work, employment and economic independence in the Edwardian and interwar period, through a focus on the writing of a critically overlooked woman author, Dorothy Whipple (1893-1966). Going beyond the contexts of production and consumption which have often taken centre stage in histories of women’s clothing, especially in relation to elite dre…

Black Victorians, British television drama, and the 1978 adaptation of David Garnett’s The Sailor’s Return
The under-representation of Black British history in British film and television drama has attracted significant public debate in recent years. In this context, this article revisits a critically overlooked British film adaptation featuring a woman of African origin as a protagonist in a drama set in Victorian England. The Sailor’s Return (1978), directed by Jack Gold, is an adaptation of a historical fiction written by David Garnett and first pu…

of experimental writing by women.Of the thirty seven chapters which make up this ambitious and wide-ranging volume, one is dedicated to writing by women and is placed alongside chapters exploring African American and postcolonial writing under the heading "Experiments with Identity."While the editors acknowledge the difficulty of defining a body of writing which is "irreducibly diverse" ("Introduction" 1), the largely formalist taxonomy which inf…
Making the blood flow backwards
In Julian Barnes's 2011 Man Booker Prize winning novel, The Sense of an Ending, the discovery of a forgotten letter prompts the narrator, Tony Webster, to reconsider the suicide of a brilliant school friend, Adrian Finn. The dramatic revelation of the existence of Finn's adult son (also called Adrian), borne of an extra-marital affair with his girlfriend's mother, is presented as offering a possible answer to the mystery of Finn's death. In this …
Spatial Environmental Modeling of Autoantibody Outcomes among an African American Population
In this study of autoimmunity among a population of Gullah African Americans in South Carolina, the links between environmental exposures and autoimmunity (presence of antinuclear antibodies (ANA)) have been assessed. The study population included patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (n = 10), their first degree relatives (n = 61), and unrelated controls (n = 9) where 47.5% (n = 38) were ANA positive. This paper presents the methodology use…

Imitations of life
Contemporary debate and speculation about the prospect of reproductive cloning reveals the way in which such beings, as 'copies' of human originals, challenge notions of the human, especially in relation to issues of individuality, authenticity and origin. This article explores the representation of human cloning in Kazuo Ishiguro's speculative fiction, Never let me go, published in 2005. It investigates the possibility that Ishiguro's exploratio…
Retrospective Sex
This article examines the representation of intersexuality in Jeffrey Eugenides's Pulitzer Prize-winning 2002 novel Middlesex . It situates the depiction of intersexuality within the context of current scholarship on sexed identity within the field of gender and sexuality studies. It argues that while a fictional focus on ambiguously sexed identity might appear to be aligned with queer critiques of fixed categories of "sex," Eugenides's narrative…
Ancient Israelite Prophecy and Dissonance Theory
Among the dialectical structures of ancient Israelite prophecy the tension between the critique of society (threat oracles) and predictions of future wellbeing (salvation oracles) is the most striking. The trenchant criticism of society's corrupt, oppressive practices has become a hallmark of prophecy as has its equally characteristic prophesying of a golden future when Israel would live securely under a Davidic king and Jerusalem would be the fo…
